what is this "ghost galaxy thing" and when do they do it?

Do they shut down Space Mountain to (ruin) transform it for halloween like they do to put that Tim Burton junk in the HM? When will this occur? anyone?

p.s., when are they adding the "Killer Santa Mermaid" to Pirates of the Carib. ride, or the reindeer portion of the jungle cruise. I just loooooooovvvvee it when they add holiday versions of these rides!! yay!

Actually Ghost Galaxy is pretty darn cool. It seems faster, and it is pretty scary (at least for my kids that like the regular version). Anyhoo, to answer your question it is transformed for the Halloween season, this year Sept 16-Oct 31. I expect it to be down for transformation several days before Sept 16 (around the 11th) and down again Nov. 1 to revert back to your beloved version.

I agree with you about HMH, but I agree with Shannon about SM:GG. It's pretty cool, and the ride does seem faster, probably because it's darker. They replace the standard projections with a kind of psychedelic show that includes ghosts and stuff. I like it.

Another non-fan of HMH here but a definite fan of SMGG. It is a cool change. I am glad DLR can do this kind of thing to keep the parks from getting stale. Walt Disney was the one who said that Disneyland was not built to be museum and that it would be ever changing.

This will be my first time going to the parks during Halloween so I can't wait to see both of these rides changed! I LOVE Nightmare before Christmas so I am really looking forward to seeing that version of HM. However, now you guys got me pumped to ride this Ghost Galaxy version of SM. Do any other rides get things changed with them, or is it only these two? Also, I assume the HM change is running all day since it seems like they change a ton, but is the SM change an all day thing or is it just for those partys?

The Space Mtn change is all day. All month, actually. There's fall and halloween decor all over the park (tho not on all the rides.) Disney doesn't do anything half way.

I LOVE ghost galaxy!! I was very surprised that I liked it so much!! I do LOVE the original version of the ride of course, but it's nice to get a little change once a year. I also really enjoyed the HM transformation too.
I rode it for the first time last year and I am definitely planning another Halloweentime visit again this year

OP - We're in the minority but I'm with you on not caring for GG Overlay. To me it ruins the 'flying' feeling I usually get from the ride, particularly the bad soundtrack. This year hoping to download the original soundtrack on to my phone and see if I can sync it in my headphones to get the effect of non-overlayed SM.
My party loves the crowds/weather/etc of the fall but it seems like the Halloween celebration is getting longer and harder to avoid every year. While I enjoy the pumpkins, etc, in the park I get tired of HMH every year. Somehow we thought going at the end of Sept would mean we'd have a 'regular' DL experience, but Halloween time just got longer again ...
Probably wouldn't mind as much if they changed the attractions for different special features ... several years ago they did Rockin and Rollin Space Mtn and Screamin which was very neat, loved it, where they were set to Red Hot Chili Pepper soundtracks & concert-type lighting. Probably wouldn't want that every year, but for them to mix it up more would be awesome.

My 7 year old son hated Ghost Galaxy but loves Space Mountain. It is scarier for smaller kids, but I am sure many like it better because it is scarier. It stinks, because we are going again in October and he has already said he won't ride it. He likes Haunted Mansion better, though He is a big Jack Skellington fan so I guess you win some and lose some.

Most likely, since you'll be there on a completely different calendar week than the Halloween kick-off. Plenty of time after you leave to get GG overlay up before the event starts!

But you're really missing out. JMO! I love the original but GG is fantastic! So much so that I'd make vacation time to go back during Halloween time to see the overlay again. The ghost "sees" you and chases you during the ride. Here's a video that shows some hints of the ghost:
