what is there to do?

hi

i was wondering what there is for the kids to do on the virgin flights? do you get little kiddy packs with things in? what kinda things do you get in? im wondering what kinda things to take on the plane for my kids to do too? up to now i dont have a think but were going to get them some dollars on friday and some things to go in their backpacks.

There is colouring, puzzles that sort of thing...nothing amazing. I took a selection of the pocket money toys in Early Learning (nothing over £3). Biggest hit was a tiny "voice recorder" which DD played with for ages. A small tub of plastic animals was another surprise fave. I got her some Disney Stickers and a small album, mini stamping kit, small packs of dolly mixtures (as she isnt normally allowed sweets!) and also a twisty puzzle thing on a keyring. She was 3 on last years flight and watched Jungle Book 2 all the way through as well. The year before a hand held "magic scribbler" pad was excellent.

For older children then the films and music channels on the Entertainment system are good. Plus their own personal CD players or gameboys.

Let children of any age pick a couple of comics/magazines from the Duty Free shop. That will kill another hour on the plane!!

Yes, definitely don't count on the Virgin bag to distract for any length of time Lucy. Last time we went there was a little puzzle book, a book for ages about 7-9 (which wasn't that rivetting a read to be honest) and some sweeties and that was about it. How old are your children Lucy? There are a few cool threads I could post (LOL saw your post and now I feel really under pressure to come up with the goods ) but if I know their ages I can be a bit more helpful!

For me, my DD's are obsessed with their Gameboys so we would not get on the plane without them! I hasten to add that we ensure the sound is turned off though!

Allie's advice is good though and the meals / drinks always let a bit of time roll by

I think I must be the only person in the world that thinks this but I always find plane journeys pass quickly! (Once I have got through the horror of take off)

my dd's are 9 and 5. they have never used a gameboy but my dh has one so it might be worth letting them use that. dd5 is pretty good at the x box and ps1 though so will probly be able to use it enough not to get frustrated. i think we might have to get some different games for it though. what can you suggest for young girls? she likes simpsons hit and run on the xbox and spiro on ps1 (stuff like that). those links would be great. i cant remember what i said was it something like you were the oracle? we could take walkman/mp3 stuff like that. what are the films usually like. dd5 is a telly addict and if fairly odd parents is on for the whole trip she would watch it for the whole trip. i have to put a fairly odd parents ban on at home. a book would be great for dd9 she reads one every few days. can you think of anything really gripping for a 9yr old. she likes the molly moon stuff and jaqueline wilson but shes starting to really get into sci-fi stuff.

OK! This is good we are on the same wavelength as my DD's are 8 and 5 so I know where you are coming from!!

Gameboy games for young girls? Mine love Sonic the Hedgehog (lots of different games), Spyro, Rayman, Mario Cart Racing, Pokemon something or another (a roleplaying type game which I guess they will either love or hate! Mine love it). I like the gameshop Game as you can pick up second hand games cheaper (I won't say cheap as I would be lying)

Walkmans, definitely. Music and story cassettes - what about Harry Potter? (for the 9 yr old)

Books - my 8 year old is really into Jacqueline Wilson, all of the Horrible Histories series, Diana Wynne Jones (I love this myself), Roald Dahl. Any of these sound any good?

Films, hmmm...they weren't that great when we went last for children. There was one children's film on pretty much continually (I seem to remember it being something to do with a horse?!) but there were also cartoons on a loop. Mine loves the failry odd parents too! But I can't work out why!! I think it's most odd! You can check out the films that will be showing on Virgin's website (I'll look for a link in a mo)

I also take puzzle books for both (age appropriate) and those Osbourne Adventure books for the oldest - you know the ones where there is an adventure all the way through and they have to solve little puzzles before going onto the next page?

For the younger one, definitely get some of the handheld games Allie talks about to keep her amused.

My personal policy is to take more than I think I will ever need and I have yet to regret it

My DD enjoys her Finding Nemo and Shrek 2 games on the Playstation 2 (when she can fight me off of them!!)...both of these are also available for the Gameboy Advance (guess what we be buying in Duty Free this year!!).

Games in Duty Free? This is a concept I must have always missed! How much cheaper are they? I mean durr yes I know they will be free of tax but do they load the price to make up for this?

Its doubtful you will find games much cheaper in Duty Free, ive never been that impressed with the prices there. Your best (cheapest) bet if you want originals (ie you dont want to go down the pirate games route) is to order them online from one of the canadian sites offering free worldwide shipping, such as dvdsoon.com or dvdboxoffice.com (note the prices are in canadian dollars which has a different exchange rate).
Or of course you could buy from Walmart, which is pretty cheap, but you will of course have sales tax, and they wont be as cheap as online.

Hi Lucy,

I've got loads of stuff from those sites all printed off ready to go and it looks good to me. There are few American spellings but that's about it from what I have briefly seen. They aren't games in the Gamboy Advance sense, they're games like puzzles, activities and stuff

The Gameboy Advance does not have any territory/Region lockout so you can buy the games anywhere.

Ive have used the sites I mention on a regular basis, but not specificaly for GameBoy Advance....I don't buy them ;-)

i have been browsing the net for games for the gameboy and i found a real gem of a site. its about £10 cheaper per game than GAME and a bit cheaper than cd wow. ITS WOOLWORTHS WEBSITE. yes you heard me right. its cheap as chips. just thought i would pass this on to you guys.
