What is the worst non weather related Damage to your home?

House fire. Water damage was more than fire damage, which is a good thing because the fire didn’t get too far.

Our gravity feed got clogged by a tree root and our sump pump wasn't functioning (unbeknownst to us because the gravity feed always does all the work) and our finished basement flooded while we were out trick or treating with the kids in 2019.

Cracks in the outside stucco (a common finding on homes in our area) from post construction house settling.

We had to redo all the sewer pipes under our house as they were cast iron and rusted through like a horseshoe shape where there was no longer a bottom. Unfortunately it’s a problem that plagues the whole neighborhood. It was a big job and we had to re do the bathrooms down to the studs to get the new pipes to toilets and tubs and they had to jackhammer through the floors.
Ughhhhhh we need these replaced too. I’m dreading it. I think it’s gonna be an expensive nightmare, but I can’t keep putting it off.

It was really bad luckily all of our bathrooms were on exterior walls so they didn’t have to jackhammer through the floors other than in the bathrooms themselves. Some people have had tunnels dug under the house that they then fill with concrete but it can undermine the foundation. We did one bathroom at a time after the pipes were re-routed around the house it was a juggling act of plumbers and tile guys. There’s another option where they will reline the pipes with basically a new epoxy pipe if you catch it before the pipes become horseshoes but ours were too far gone.

Anything near the toilet had a rough go for a while there during our son's potty training.

Dishwasher leaked and ruined the kitchen floor.
Same - huge nightmare oh what a mess !

Had Hot Water Heater explode in house when I was a kid - another huge mess - in closet with soap and food ! Ruined everything including only bathroom we had
Part of ceiling caved in from rot - again I was a kid - my father never fixed anything - this was in my room - so big problem for me - his solution was to drape plastic over it for several years and put bucket under it - my job - dump bucket - and try and move my bed as it was in way - I could go on and on !

Next door neighbor missed his driveway on the side of his house and drove through our fence and crashed into our garage. Thankfully, no cars were in there. Then he got disoriented, backed his car up and then turned the steering and drove into our back porch steps. His car put a nice crack in our foundation and when the city officals came, they said we would have to vacate the house because of it. However, since it was a few days before Christmas '99, I begged him to reconsider. In the long run, he said we have to stay out of the kitchen (crack was under kitchen window) until the crack could be fixed. Of course, I agreed, but I had to use the kitchen with the holidays upon us. Honestly, the crack wouldn't have caused an issue after another inspector came. He caused over $10,000 of damage. Plus, he was not supposed to be driving anymore, I think he was 80 something.

Yeah my bathrooms are on outside part of house. The main pipe in the basement isn’t under any flooring either. I should look into the epoxy but I have a feeling mine might be beyond that - ughh

A pipe in a wall had a tiny leak. I noticed water on my garage floor and called a plumber. He said it could be a tough thing to find because there wasn’t necessarily a direct correlation between where I was seeing water and where the leak was. He advised me to call my insurer. They sent out one of their adjusters who advised it was going to be an expensive fix and that I was covered. I had gaping, but tidy, holes in every wall near that garage wall: laundry room, kitchen, great room, entryway. Long story short. The estimate for plumping, drywalling, painting, etc. was more than $10k. I paid a small deductible and kennel costs for my boxer so he wasn’t “helping” the workers.

We had a bat infestation. Damage wasn’t that bad, just a bad smell for awhile, but humanely getting them permanently out of the attic was pricey as they are a protected species.
