It allowed many people in the rural Tennessee Valley (Tenn and AL) to have power for the first time. It also employed lots of men when jobs were scarce~ I believe it was part of President Roosevelt's CCC or WPA (programs to stimulate the economy) during the Depression

Many of the lakes near where I live where created when the area was flooded. My mom and dad remember the area before, when it was farmland. They also can tell stories of when they first got electricity, etc. My dad was born in 1930.

They also managed to stop a lot of devastating flooding that was routine in the valleys of TN by building their dams. I live near one of them. They lower the water in the lakes gradually in the fall/early winter so they can accomdate the extra water from snow melting, and then let them fill back up in the spring. You'll see convenience store near the lakes that sell bait and beer (can't have one without the other, right) put up their signs each spring, "The lake is up."

Your opinions about what constitutes proper history notwithstanding, it's just as easy to ask a question on the DIS. It has the added bonus of being able to provide additional interesting facts, like where Lindsay's husband works, or what "the lake is up" means. I couldn't find either of those facts in a Wikipedia article.
