What is the rationale here? (College related)

My daughter is a senior and applying to colleges. She would like to attend Texas A&M, but we have been getting various reports as to whether they offer her major (B.S. in nursing).

Finally, it was clarified that Texas A & M offers the nursing degree from Texas A&M Health Science Center. She would go and do a year at the TAMU campus, and then apply to nursing school at the TAMHSC across town. The rest of her classes would be at the HSC and her degree would actually say TAMHSC instead of TAMU.

Okay, I understand all that. We were fine with that up until we were told that once she was in nursing school, she would not be able to live in the dorm, attend sporting events as a student, use the recreational facilities, or get an Aggie ring.

Well, at that point we decided we'd go ahead and send her to one of her other top schools where she could finish her degree as part of the student body and not a second class citizen. I just can't understand the rationale behind those decisions. She would recieve a Bachelor's Degree just like the other students. I understand the Health Science Center is across town, but when you are a part of the University System in the same town as the University, what would be the motivation for students to go to school at the HSC?

For my daughter, she is a bit bummed but there were other schools that were just as high on her list as TAMU, so she's not devastated, and I'm just annoyed, but mainly I just want to understand why they would cut themselves off from a group of students.

why would she want to stand all the way through a loosing football game anyway? At least this way she won't be depressed on Thanksgiving because of the loss.

She probably needs to go to Austin.

lol

That is weird. I have never heard of that before. That would stop me from attending there as well. There are PLENTY of REALLY good nursing programs around the country that you don't need to settle for this one.

It just seems nuts to me. Part of me wants to call and quiz them as to why they do it, but my child doesn't seem very upset so it's not really worth it.

Well a lot of schools reserve dorms for underclassmen, so that part isn't that unusual.

But if your daughter isn't that upset about it, why worry about it yourself?

I think you should because I'm curious to the answer! ;)

golfgal, the tradition at a&m is to stand through the game. i cant figure it out either, but then again, i'm not an aggie

I assume the nursing school is a completely different school and not part of A&M (some kind of affiliation that lets them share the name but not be part of the school), so she wouldn't actually be an A&M student, and therefore wouldn't be eligible for those benefits.

Upon reading the website, it appears that the nursing school is it's own college that is somewhat very new.

I guess that can be good or bad depending on your idea of going to school. Sounds great if you don't want the whole "college experience" and just want to get in and out.

I suppose it would be nerve racking to know that the program was started on 2008 and they don't even had graduates from it yet.

Maybe it used to be on campus and now it is not? Or maybe nursing is a new offering? Not sure.

Message from the Dean

Welcome to the College of Nursing at the Texas A&M Health Science Center. I am very pleased you are visiting our website and wanting to know more about the College and our commitment to excellence.

The College of Nursing was approved in 2008 to offer baccalaureate nursing education

Alright, here is some information that might help clear up any confusion.

http://honors.tamu.edu/downloads/opgsa/nursing.pdf - especially take a look at this link from The Office of Professional School Advising (at Texas A&M)

http://tamhsc.edu/about/ - Now, take a look at this page. The first paragraph is especially telling...
Our university is a premier assembly of colleges

Also http://news.nurse.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080114/SC02/80111007

It's pretty clear that the two institutions, "Texas A&M University" and "Texas A&M Health Science Center" only have one thing in common...the phrase "Texas A&M". They are two separate entities. For some more clarification, see this page:
http://www.tamus.edu/overview/faq.html
(The following is not a direct-quote, I'm just synthesizing their information.)
There are 20 different members of the Texas A&M System and 10 of those have the exact phrase "Texas A&M" at the beginning of their name. The Texas A&M system is simply the name for the State of Texas' land-grant system of education.

Hope that helps.
agnes!

Now, now-you'd never survive if you said that around DS's friends.
