What is the purpose of checking in online 30 days?

I don't see any advantage for Disney or me to do the check-in at 30 or 60 days, but I do see an advantage of doing it before the rooms are assigned since that is the point in the process now where you can put in (limited) requests without waiting on hold. I normally am not real picky about my room, but I did have a section request for our next trip.

Do you call if you don't check in online? How will they know your room preferences?

No need to call, email MS via the contact form on the member website. We do it right after making the reservation online.

If you check in on line are you able to select who is able to charge to room.

No, you need to visit the front desk to set that up.

I am 55 days out from our HHI arrival and online check in is not showing as an option on the member site. Is online check in not available at 60 days for HHI ?
