What is the purpose of a sitting room in a master bedroom?

Oh, I would love to have a master bedroom big enough for a sitting room or area. A place to go to read a good book in a comfortable chair, rather than having to be actually in bed. A fireplace would be nice too, and have a couple chairs and maybe a loveseat....nice. :)

Isn't that called a living room?:confused3

Hey. I'm on the couch in my bedroom right now, with my feet on the coffee table. Doggie can't get back here so it's much more relaxing!

Oh boy, I have enjoyed this thread...
Seriously though, we had one in our last house bigger than some people's family room. We had it set up with a sofa, fireplace and TV. It turned into a hangout for the kids (they were young, 3 and 5). When we built this MB I said no way. Instead I used the extra space for a laundry room. Now this is something I really appreciate in my bedroom!

I don't have one but often wish I did, I would love to have a place in my room where we could sit and talk while one or both of us are dressing and we could both sit and put on shoes insteady of having to go in the den to sit to put on our shoes and hollering at one another from different rooms.

I would use it as a place to relax in the evenings. A nice comfy chair where I could put my feet up and read the newspaper or be on my lap top. Right now my DH usually watches TV in our room and I'm in the living room. We either yell to each other down the hall way or we force the other one to come to us if we need to say something. With a nice little sitting area, we could be together, but both doing what we want to do. A fireplace in there would be nice too.

Wouldn't a den suffice? Or a living room?
I think my sister's den is IN the master "suite." In the bedroom, you can go up a few steps that lead to a loft overlooking the bedroom. LOL! It seems to be the computer area. Then there's the shower in one corner of the bathroom, the HUGE tub with jets completely separate and right next to it. Must be nice! ;)

we had one in our old house which is the exact same plan as the house we are in now but this house it is a bedroom. We are weird, we moved around the corner to get a house just like ours but with a gorgeous pool.

My husband used to sit in there and watch tv and drink beer. Not a real sacrifice to do that in bed or in the bonus room. Our furniture still fits in the room but we gave away 2 chairs. Oh well LOL.

I'd like a small one. We have a reclining chair in a corner of our bedroom and I often go in there to read. My husband likes to make phone calls in there where it is quiet. Sometimes my husband and I sit and have long conversations that aren't meant to be overheard by the kids. It would be nice to have two chairs.

I really didn't see the need for it until my kids got older. It gets really hard to have time or privacy for yourself when the kids stay up later than you do!

We had one in our last house. I loved the idea...but never used it! It even had a door to the outside, leading to the patio. It was really neat, but not useful for us. I did pile it full of junk! Here we live in a huge villa with two living rooms downstairs and a big gameroom upstairs. If DH and I want to talk alone, the boys are sent to the gameroom. I would always like to have a master bedroom big enough to have a recliner, but it doesn't need to be a whole sitting room

Around here, when you are having a house built, you have to sacrifice a bedroom to get a sitting room, so as nice as it's sounds, I think it's a waste of space. And it's better to have that extra bedroom when you are reselling. Of course, I have 3 kids....someone with no kids might prefer the sitting room.

We have one off our bedroom, it is 16x14 and we turned it into a computer room/tv room. Our whole family spends a lot of time in this room. Some day I would like to reconfigure the door arrangement so you don't have to walk through our bedroom to use this room but who knows. The previous owners used it as an office. If I ever worked from home I would do the same thing.

Ours is where we keep the eliptical machine-
And the ironing board.
And the TV
So our sitting room is our excercise/laundry processing room.
and the bedroom can stay as the where the magic happens part of the house with no "distractions":rotfl2:

Personally I would have preferred a playroom upstairs instead of the way it is now- but it does work for us.

I recently moved into a townhome with a master bedroom with a sitting area ... it's why I'm here!!!!

I love it. I work mostly from home and I made it my office, my laundry sort area, my kitty loving area EVERYTHING. I had a TINY bedroom for years and now this is my sanctuary. :cloud9:

It has french doors and a SOARING vaulted ceiling with a large nook also, which makes it look even bigger. I knew it was phenomenal when my Comcast person just stood in the middle of the room in awe just looking up ...

She said "Wow... I've never seen a bedroom so large..."

I thought she has HAD to see hundreds of bedrooms. I knew it was a big'un then!!

The house we're building has a small sitting area, but I have yet to plan any sort of seating for the area. But it would be nice to have two small reclining chairs...and perhaps a plasma tv in the area.

I already have a media room, a living/great room, and a play room for the kids. You'd think it would be enough...but honestly. My bedroom seems to be the only room in the house that remains free of kid-clutter. So this may be a good option for us to use that space in our room.

Maybe to just get away from the kids and sit and read a book for a bit.:confused3 I don't get the 'formal dining room'. One place for a table is all I need and it sure doesn't have to be formal.

Where else would I put my treadmill (more like an exercise sculpture!:lmao: ), my triple stroller, and any other misc items I don't want to look at?:confused3 :rotfl2:

I don't get the whole sitting room in the bedroom thing either. I get up in the morning and don't even get to see my bedroom until about midnight. At that point I don't need a couch and chair.

ETA- I would like a space for just a recliner or a chair and ottoman if in the unlikely event that I get 10 minutes I can sit and read or do a craft.
