What is the process to renting DVC points?

I always read on here how people rent DVC points at a much lower price than paying for a Deluxe. What is the process to doing so? I am so gung-ho about DVC.

I'm still trying to get my head around everything with DVC but I am renting from a member for my honeymoon. On the DVC Rent/Trade board you have two options, either 1) post a ressie wanted and the date or 2) search for ressies for your date. You might need to be flexible for what resorts you want. A LOT of faith and trust has to be there because you aren't using a "company" or Disney directly. If you decide to post on that board, just make sure you read the sticky about posting -- or else your post could get moved. Hope this helps a little bit. I'm still new to understanding myself.

the reason it is lower - you are renting from another person (DVC owner) vs Disney.

but it is a great deal you can get a studio at OKW Sun-thur for $80 a night - disney price is $269 with taxes $303.

some people will rent to you for $10 a points (8 points @ $10)

however if you want BCV or BWV expect to pay more like $12 to $14 per point. these resorts are high demand - so their owners can demand more.

a dvc member can make a reservation at the 11 month to their home resort (where they own). at 7 months or less any DVC member can make a reservation at any DVC resort.

so if you want BWV standard view for Thanksgiving - well you can probably forget it for this year - but you can get with a BWV owner for next year.

the cancelation policy is very, very different. You can't cancel a DVC reservation in the last 5 days like you can a WDW resort one. if you are going to cancel you must cancel at least 60 days before the check in date. (otherwise the member doesn't have time to rerent their points and can lose them)

some members won't allow cancelation at all.

I was wondering where you can find out how may points it takes per night. For example, if I was planning an 8 night stay how many points would I need? Does it change per hotel?

How many points would I need to purchase from a DVC member to stay at the POLY for 8 nights, or does this even apply? :confused3

There are point charts for the DVC WDW resorts at the top of this page - just click on DVC Point Charts.

Most of the time, it is more expensive to use DVC points to stay at a non-DVC resort like the Poly than it would be to pay cash. The DVC point system is set up to encourage members to stay at DVC resorts. There are options to use points at resorts like the Poly, but I don't know offhand how many points would be required for a stay there. I'd be willing to bet, though, that you would find it cheaper to pay cash for your Poly stay!!

Okay, let me see if I understand this. I looked at the chart and this is what I've deducted...

June 29, 2007 through July 8, 2007

June 29th would be 29 points (at SSR)
June 30the would be 29 points
July 1-7 would be a total of 129 points

This would be a grand total of 187 points for the entire stay. Is this correct? Am I at least close??? Then the sale of points can range from $8 pp to $12pp??? HELP

I'm getting 181 points for an SSR studio, checking in on Friday 6/29/07 and checking out on Sunday 7/8/07. That's 9 nights, four of which are Fri/Sat.

ETA: Incidentally, if you have the flexibility to adjust your days two days later, you'll save some money.

Most of the time when you see points priced below $10, there's a good reason. It might be an owner who doesn't know what they are doing (YOUR worst nightmare), or the points may be "distressed," meaning there are significant restrictions on their use. For your purposes, I'd realize that $12 per point is one heck of a bargain, and I'd plan on paying $10-12.

Before you get too far into this process, go to the DIS Rent/Trade board and read the FAQ at the top of the page thoroughly. That will give you a good understanding, and a much better basis to ask questions.

thanks for the help. You actually got less on your total than I did. I counted the 29 and 30th at the weekend rate of 29 points then I went to the weekly rate for July 1-7. That gave me 187, but if you came up with 181 hey, at least I'm close. I'm not sure this is something I want to do, but it's an option. I was also figuring around $10 just to keep it a round figure when trying to estimate what the cost of the room only would be. I know it's not an exact science until you talk to someone and actually make the arrangements. I want to thank everyone for you help, I think I may actually understand this process. LOL

I rechecked on the chart above because I'd used Caskbill's Planner, and I found your mistake. That week is 123 points (for a total of 181); you apparently read it as 129.

If you move your trip back two days as I suggested, you still have nine nights, but only two of them are weekend, so the total points drop to 149...a savings of +/-$320.

The other little trick is to pay cash for Fri/Sat, at DVC or elsewhere. You can no doubt do better than $290 per night!

Good news / Bad news

The bad news is that it is becomming harder to find points for $10 / night. The good news is that there is usually no resort/sales tax collected on DVC rentals, so you save the 11.5% (12.5% after 9/1).
