Which charateristic do find to be most important?

Poll question should read "characteristic" not "characteristics." oops.

I'd say interested in the students but he really needs all of the characteristics stated. Unfortunately I can only think of 1 principal at any of the schools I've worked at with all those characteristics. His name is Greg Zawyer and he has been principal at 2 of the schools I worked at.

I did not vote.

My choice would have been Educated. There are so many principals out there that don't even have their degrees in Education. This really bothers me. I think that you need to be educated ABOUT children if you are going to be in such an important role. You'd be surprised how many principals out there who wouldn't know what to do if you put them in a classroom.

Anywho...that's just my opinion.

I had to vote trustworthy. If you can't trust the person, the rest of the characteristics don't count. I have worked for both kinds.

A good principal is easy, calm and patient. They are peaceful,
never ruffled. They address each person, everyday with respect
and graciousness. They are self assured and are able to pass
that feeling on to comfort and teach students, staff and parents.
We had such a principal at our school for 5 years. We are going
to miss her but she has trained us well.

All other things being said, I voted for visable. I feel a principal
who knows it's important to participate in their school would
also have most of these other characteristics. One of the schools
I drive into, the principal has a sign up in the office that says,
"NO PARENTS BEYOND THIS POINT". Now there's a principal I
would not want to have in my child's school!

I said Interested in the Students because I feel that if the Principal is this, then the rest will fall into place. We are blessed to have a WONDERFUL Principal at my girls school. She's very friendly, LOVES the kids, and is very fair and makes the time to talk to anyone who requests hers.

IMO, it's a combination of traits that make for a great principal. I think one of the most important traits is that he or she be approachable. Principals really set the tone for the school and their entire staff.
