What is the most durable fabric for a sofa?

My Dh and I bought our very first sofa for our apt together in 2001. We have some name brand (can't remeber what) but the material itself is wonderful. Our couch is made with a material called durapella (sp??) and it's very comfy. The great thing is that anything can be spilled on it and with hand soap and water it comes clean. No water stains no other stains. Our couch is tan and our chair is green. The couch has suffered salsa spills, kool-aid spills, ketchup, soda and even blood. No stains on it whatsover. A good friend of mine with 4 children under the age of 10 bought it and loves her too. I would recomend it especially for the price.

We recently replaced the cushions on our 20 year old This End Up Furniture couch and love seat. I believe that the fabric on the original cushions and the replacements is Olefin based. This End Up used to sell material, so I guess it is conceiveable that you could order enough fabric from them to re-cover an existing couch.

Or you can just go out and buy a new one.

Thanks for the info, Carol. I will do a lot of comparison shopping before I purchase a sofa. I want a good name brand that will last. I thought my Lay-Z-Boy would last also. There is a lifetime warranty on the frame, but only one year on the fabric.

A one year wear warranty is pretty typical on fabrics. Unless, of course, they come with the Monsanto Wear Warranty that I spoke about before. Not to say they wear out in one year, but generally manufacturers know the problem with lie with the fabric well before there is frame or cushion issues..

I went with leather this time around as I have always wanted it, but never was able to justify the price. However, if my leather sofa looks much better in 15 years than a fabric would have, I guess the long term savings will be there. It is that initial sticker shock that will get you every time! Our couches are denim. They're about 9 years old and have worn really well, like a favorite pair of jeans.

We have a microfiber sofa and chair by Natuzzi. Not only is it very comfortable, it wears well and looks great. We have had it about 4 years and could'nt be happier. Spills clean up with soap and water. We have one 7 year old, 2 cats and 1 dog. The cats are allowed on the furniture. Thay have clawed it when they jump up at times but it's not noticible. The dog has only been caught on it a couple times but has not damaged it at all. We have been able to get up anything that spills. The best part is comfort. We sat on about 50 sofa's when we were looking. The minute we sat on this one we were sold. The sofa cost $847.00. Hope this helps.

Thanks a bunch. I guess I'll have to rethink leather. As I said, I've never sat on one that I haven't felt like I was going to slide on the floor. Maybe it was the "grain" or quality. Also I assumed it was out of my range but maybe not.

I just purchased leather in Dec and am hoping it will wear well with 4 pugs who are couch potatos. So far, so good

I got a sofa and loveseat on sale for around $2200 if I recall correctly. I thought it really looked like a good deal.

Definately easy to clean when there's a spill.

I have had a leather sofa for about 6 or 7 years now. I won't buy another one!!! I paid somewhere between $1,000 and $1,200 for it. Bought it at a leather furniture store. If you do get leather, DON'T get a light color! It's a pain in the neck to keep clean. Mine is kind of an off white. And it didn't seem to take too long before it got that middle of the sofa sag. How does it do that when we sit on the ends, not the middle?
