thinking about joining DVC and wondered how important the time of year is when purchasing or buying resale. I see lots of threads/resale ads with "June UY" or "December UY". Is there one month better than others?

I've got a question:
We just bought into AKL with the 100-point incentive and our use year is Dec. 08. Now, we always vacation at WDW around the beginning of December, week pending on our APs.
Now, here is the question: In 2009, we have our standard winter trip which is going to fall from Nov. 29-Dec. 4. What would that be considered? Would it be all 2008 UY points since the ressie starts before Dec. 1?
Nope - DVC is a night by night system. November 29 and 30 will be in your 2008 Use year, and the other nights will be 2009 points.
If your job or lifestyle makes it difficult to schedule time off with a fairly high degree of certainty, use year would be important. Otherwise it doesn't make a lot of difference.
Regardless of use year, if an "emergency" occurs, requiring cancellation within 30 days of check-in, your points will go into a restricted status called "holding" and there are no use years that will prevent this.
Bottom line is, if you don't engage in speculative bookings, and you have a fairly stable employment situation, use year will be of minimal concern to most members. It's also important to consider that your optimal use year today may not be so good in 5-10 years due to lifestyle or job changes.
Good luck!

You could always borrow the specific amount of points needed from the '09 allotment if you were out of '08 points.
... but at any given point in time... UY does indeed matter... and I think it is a disservice to indicate otherwise.

In 8 years it has never mattered to me. Never lost a point or found myself anywhere near doing so. So while we may argue the theoretical implications of use years, it has never made a practical (real world) difference to me. Hence my cavalier attitude about over-thinking such matters. We don't restrict ourselves to vacationing at one certain time each year, so use years, in my case, just wouldn't matter. We have visited WDW in every month and are not wedded to any specific timeframe.
Of course, one should always do what makes one comfortable and if a specific use year makes you feel better about your membership, by all means go for it!
We have a Oct UY. We never vacation in the heat of summer and never will. We get new points every Oct 1 and have until May 31 to bank them. ...
My recommendation is more generic. Many people do not have the flexibility to travel any time during the year.
In my case... I chose a March UY because I wanted to optimize for summer vacations. With kids in school, and the likelyhood of eventual grandchildren in school... and our desire to take 2 week vacations... it was (and continues to be) a good use year for us.
In summer '06... I had to cancel a reservation because some family members cancelled their trip at the last minute (within my cancellation window). My March UY allowed me to use those holding acount points in a Nov reservation. Had I had a September UY... I would have lost the points.
I fully acknowledge that it is hard to pick a perfect use year for all vacations. We choose to do a one-time New Years reservation for this year. My March UY is horrible for this one trip. However... this is the exception, not the standard vacation we will take. If something happens... I will be trying to schedule a last minute trip in Jan/Feb before I lose the points.
All I am suggesting is to think about this before you pick your use year... and pick one that minimizes any potential problems.
