What is the deal with Shades of Green?

My BFF and her husband (who is in the Air Force) are planning to go to WDW with my family in January. She called SOG to book us both a room and they said that there is a waiting list and that they are booked. We can call back in November to be Officially put on the waiting list. NOW...I didn't speak with them, my BFF did. Can anyone give me some insight as to how this works? I want to know about the "spill-over" plan or whatever it is called. I would rather get a spill over discount and stay at the Animal Kingdom Lodge!

Any advice or info?

I have heard about overflow rates, I believe they're called, but I have no idea how that works. I'm bumping this, because I'm curious too!

What happened for us once was that we tried booking SOG but they were booked so they had availability at CR for the same rate as the SOG rooms. I believe that SOG only gets a certain number of rooms at the other resorts available to them to accommodate overflow guests so it isn't always a guaranteed thing. The reason I am guessing that is because one other time we tried booking SOG and they told us they were booked and had no other availabiliity at all.

We did a split stay a few years ago between the SOG and Animal Kingdom Lodge. SOG was available for the first three nights and then we got overflow rates for the next 7 nights of our trip. You can't use the overflow rates if they have availability. We ended up getting a savanah view room at an overflow rate of $199/night.
We have called for overflow rates since that trip and they do not always have them available. When they are available, they may only have certain resorts available. All your DFF has to do is call and ask for the overflow rates. They will let you know what might be available.
