What is the deal with Millennial Pink?

Somehow, I've missed the significance of all the Millennial Pink merchandise and food. I guess I've been living under a rock (a plain gray one, not millennial pink LOL!) Can someone fill me in?

My daughter (12) just thinks they're cute. She's not on any social media but has seen the pics as we look at all things Disney online and would like a pair because she likes the way they look.

I fell for the Rose Gold hype on my last trip. I said pre-trip that I wouldn't, and then I saw everyone wearing the Rose Gold ears and I thought they were so pretty....so now I have a pair.

Disney didn't coin the name millenial pink. Pantone did. Millenial Pink was the "2017 Color of the Year."

2018's is Ultraviolet Purple. Disney just repainted the famous "purple wall" to include this shade.

If you look at any fashion layout you'll see the hot accessory color is pink. Or any shade of the rose gold color. Since most fashion comes from the young starlet demographic and they are mellinneals, for the most part, it's taken on a name of its own. I do think the name is something Disney is using mostly but they didn't make the color popular. It's the hot shade everywhere.

Millenial pink is an actual color name. The fashion and graphic design powers that be announce the color palettes every year for what is "in style". Disney didn't decide to call it that and they didn't start the hype. Check our www.pantone.com for the latest on what the "it colors" are for various years and seasons.

Ok it actually sounds like you did NOT “fall for the hype”, because you weren’t going to buy one based on the name or what you read.

Then you saw them, liked them, and bought them.

No hype needed. Just something you like.


Same with the light pink bands. It’s a color many like. I actually figure the name has worked against the sales.

There's always a color of the year. It's something that's been going on for ages. Exactly how it's decided upon I'm not sure about. I mean, I know Pantone does it but I'm not clear exactly on what all the processes they use when picking it.
I also wonder if anyone goes back and reviews past choices to see if they really took off as Pantone expected or if they pick duds. I know I've seen a few that I just couldn't get behind, so to speak. I wouldn't use them in decorating or fashion, didn't really see them everywhere, like the rosey pink last year. Which is interesting because it's not really two different colors like Disney did, with a set of Rose Gold ears and a set of "Millennial Pink" ears. The color from Pantone was actually just a rosey pink. Or Rose Quartz, and falls between the 2 colors of ears.

I did find this, which I found rather interesting. They bring up at the end, the same thoughts I've had. Which comes first, Pantone picking the color or fashion/ad industry using the color and Pantone picking up on it?

I had just Googled this myself the other day because I kept wondering what all this talk about millennial pink was all about!

I hope this means I'll be extra fashionable now with my purple (excuse me, I mean, "Ultraviolet") magic band and my pink girls sandals (which ended up fitting me better than the adult version!) I always feel a tad self conscious when I wear those sandals because they are soooo pink, but now I'll just tell everyone they are "Millennial Pink" and are actually the height of fashion.

The color of the year that the trend is based on is Rose Quartz, which isn't really golden. Somehow it morphed to the golden hue too. Based on my observations in fashion rose gold was used more than millennial pink. Still is

I know in the planner girl world that Erin Condren brand planners came out with rose gold coils on their planners a couple of years ago and people were gaga over them. Still are. I think the color is pretty but am not crazy for it. I do like the soft pink color but hate the name Millennial, but then I am almost twice the age of most millennials!
