I need to get a new digital camera for Disney. I want one that is durable, takes good pics, and is really, really user friendly ;)

I want it to be smallish to fit into my purse too.

What do you all recommend?

Thanks!

i have an HP 5.2 mp and it is very small. i fit it in my travelon (like a baggalini) along with my camcorder with no problems. it takes great pics and is easy on the batteries. HTH!

For my travel photos, I use the Cannon Powershot SD1000 (7.1 megapixels). It's very user friendly, takes great photos, and is small small small! Plus, the battery charge lasts a LOOOOONG time.

I have that same camera...along with several others. :lmao: The Canon SD1000 is no longer made, it's been replaced with a new model...the SD1100 I think? Anyway, the SD1000 is a tiny little camera and takes nice snapshots. If you're basically looking for a point & shoot (no manual control, not changing aperature, etc) it's a good camera. Actually, pretty much all of the Canon cameras have good image quality. You really can't go wrong with any of them. If the Canon model number starts with SD, it's going to be a smaller camera. If it starts with A, it's a medium sized camera (okay for purse, but not your pants pocket). Look on Amazon.com and see the different models available. For excellent reviews, check dpreview.com or stevesdigicams.com.

I also own a Panasonic TZ5. If I'm not using my Sony A350 DSLR, this is actually my camera of choice. It's a bit larger than the Canon SD1000, but still small enough to put in my purse easily. However, it definitely wouldn't fit in my pants pocket, even without the case. My favorite thing about it is the 10x optical zoom feature, the high quality Leica lens, and the variety of setting (night shots, fireworks, beach, portrait, scenery, etc). This camera has recently been replaced with the newer TZ6, but you can still find the TZ5 in stock at many places (Amazon.com, etc) for around $220. This camera was produced in black, silver, and blue...sometimes a particular color will be less expensive than another. For example, at the moment, the black one is about $100 more than the other 2 colors! Same camera, just different colors.

Someone above mentioned a HP camera...but HP discontinued its camera line a few years back.

A lot is going to depend on what you actually want to spend on a new camera. You can find digital cameras for $60 or $70...but you usually get what you pay for. ;)

sorry, was unaware HP didn't make cameras anymore. mine is 2 years old.

Yes, I did purchase my Canon SD1000 back in '07, I know there are newer models out.....but if anyone sees the SD1000 new anywhere, it should be dirt cheap by now. That line is SO user friendly.....if you just want to take a pic of Mickey, or a close-up of Epcot, it's great. :) I always buy Canon, love them! I agree you can't go wrong with them. I have a Canon Powershot A640 that I love as well (had it three years or so) but WOW is it heavy compared to the SD1000. I use my Powershot A640 for my eBay stuff, and some other stuff. I do have dreams of being more photo-savvy and getting into the pricier Canons that do more....maybe one day.

I just bought a kodak easy share 10 mpx with a large view area. It is very thin and easy to use and it takes really good pictures. Mine is pink and I'll be using it for our trip on Saturday.

Just received a Canon PowerShot A1100 IS as a gift. Small, light, and takes 2 AA batteries. Nice 4x zoom. This is our 3rd Canon in the house.

I have a Kodak Easyshare V1003 and I hate it. Every picture we took at Disney last week was too dark, many didn't take, and many were fuzzy. The "scene" settings don't work without a tripod. i wish I had bought a new one for the trip. My husband wants me to buy a new one ASAP. I will be checking out the reviews from the site above....
The best camera I have ever owned is a Lumix by Panasonic:worship:. It was just a wonderful camera. My husband dropped it in water at goofy golf.:confused3

How is the battery life? Are you changing them constantly?

I have a Canon PowerShot SD880IS and I love it! It has a little manual control if you're interested in that side at all. The battery lasts a very long time and I have a 16gb memory card so I can record a lot of video on top of the 100's of pics I take. BTW, the video is very nice for a point and shoot camera.

Cameras suck the life out of batteries quickly. It's best to use rechargeable AA's if you have that type of camera. On the plus side, if you're out and about and your batteries suddenly die, you can buy a pack of AA's nearly anywhere. With a camera with a dedicated battery, you can't do that....unless you want to pay $40-$50 for an extra one.

The new 1100 just showed up a week ago as an anniversary gift so I can't speak to battery lilfe. I have been told to keep the camera on "Shoot" mode rather than "View" mode to make batteries last longer. I've also heard that viewing the shots a lot can eat batteries. Not viewing the shots every evening helped my other Canon A95 go a nice distance between changes. I typically put in newly-charged rechargeable batteries before a trip and then keep a spare set of regular batteries in my suitcase or purse. I am guessing that since the new 1100 only takes 2 rather than 4 that I might be changing more often.

By the way, the A95 still functions fine. We did have to get rid of the older A85 earlier this year.

I bought a Panasonic Lumix TZ5 last month and I love it!! :cloud9: I had Kodaks before this and loved them, but they never took good pics in low light or indoor settings. This Lumix takes great shots in low light and indoors, it is small with 9mp and a 10x optical zoom. Lots of settings to choose from but mostly I use the iA (intelligent auto) setting and the camera does the thinking for me. Good Luck!!!:thumbsup2

I have a canon powershot 770IS that i bought a couple of years ago. It's a staple in my purse, you never know when there's a moment that needs to be recorded :) I also just purchased dh a canon 890 for Father's Day. He had asked me to send him my camera. so he could take pics of where he is. Since I'm always using mine, that wasn't going to happen. He really loves it.

I just got my daughter the Canon sd1200 for a graduation gift. The 1200 now replaces the 1100, and it seems like a very good camera. We had a kodak easy share that never really worked well. My older daughter has the Canon sd200 that she got 4 years ago when she graduated h.s. and it still works, so I thought we'd go for the canon, and couldn't be happier.

I just ordered a Nikkon Coolpix from Bestbuy - i heard good reviews...on sale $116.00

Thanks for all the responses in this thread. It seems that Cannon is the most popular, so I will start to look at those. Kodak seems to get a thumbs down, so I will not bother with those.

My question is the difference between Cannon SD, E, and A.
Obviously, I want to be able to take good pictures in very low light, like when I am on a ride or during the night time parades or fireworks shows, etc. Are they all good for this? What is the main difference with the letters??

:confused3 I have never bought a camera before. DH has a couple and they aren't very good, plus they are old.

Oh....Do any of them take short videos? We had a camera once that took short 1 minute video clips. It's a nice feature for sure.

Thanks!!

You seem to be pretty much a novice so any of the SD elph cameras should meet your needs. Even the cheapest SD1100IS takes videos. The videos do take a lot of space so you will also need to invest in a larger memory card. I would check out buy.com and newegg.com for deals on SD cards. Buy the biggest SD card you can afford. The elphs all have a few different manual modes which are better for low light setting such as fireworks and dark rides. I suggest playing with it before your trip.

The IS in the name stands for image stablization and helps reduce blur in action shots or on rides.
