What is the benefit of on-line check-in for Airtran and Advantage car rental..

i see on the confirmations i can check in online...but what does it give us....

By checking in online (within 24 hours prior to your flight) with Airtran, you can skip going to the ticket counter once in the airport if you have no checked luggage (or use curbside luggage check-in if your airport offers it). We do this so we can just go straight to security & the gate. Also, if you didn't pay for your seats ahead of time, you can choose your seats at this point, from what's left.

I have no idea on the car rental check-in!

Also, I have heard that if there are involuntary bumps, the last to check in is at the top of the list.... I always check in online at the 24 hour mark and I always have bags to check and pre-assigned seats.

We've done online check in with Alamo - you enter all your info (driver's license # etc.) at home and print your paperwork. Then at the airport you bypass the counter, go right to a car, and off you go. I would expect other rental companies are similar.

I like it because you miss the upsell they try to do with extra insurance, gas, etc.
