What is still not back to "normal?" (Updated April 2023)

Well, I also like it when I can feel the motion of the ocean, and some people take a cruise and are upset that they can feel any motion.
I love the feel of the motion !!! But standing/sitting around during the muster station I wouldn’t call fun, especially with how long it takes somrto finally show up

They just need to put the mango soup in a glass, call it what it is (a mango lassi) and give me a straw. That spoon and bowl is a joke. I just want to slurp it through a straw.
But if they call it a mango lassi, they're going to charge you for it..better to just ask for a straw and drink it from the bowl for 'free'. 😂

I like the motion of the ship also. I sleep better on a cruise then I do anywhere else, even at home. But I can't stand the lifeboat drill. I am claustrophobic in that I need some space in between me and others. It doesn't have to be much space, but every time we have done muster drill, they pack you together like sardines and I start to get a bit crazy. LOL Plus having to wait for the rude people that show up late is infuriating.

Well, been cruising 42 years, I just come to expect it. After all, it is a SAFETY drill and I appreciate that.

There is no reason why they have to put everyone shoulder to shoulder, especially if there is room. Giving people some space during a drill is not going to make an actual emergency unsafe. I don't want to smell the breath of the person next to me.

LOL. No worse than a Disney park.

Are you kidding me? It is nothing like the parks. For one, you are in control of how much space you leave between you and the person in front of you. And you can get up and leave any situation where you are not comfortable. On the ship, they tell you where to stand, or sit and my experience has been that there is zero personal space.

I haven't been to the parks since covid but just waiting 2 hours for a parade is worse that the muster drill. But it's true, you can choose not to see the parade.

I agree, and if you get the outdoor locations it can be miserably hot.

Since there's only been a few times in history where cruise passengers have actually had to go to muster stations you have to wonder if it's all in vain. I personally think it would still be mass chaos...hopefully we never have to find out.
Well considering that there was no muster drill before leaving Civitavecchia when the Costa Concordia accident happened, and many people were unsure what to do or where to go, I don't feel that it's ever in vain.
I've heard the shpiel almost 30 times now so snapping the photo is good enough for me but I believe especially for beginners, it's important to thoroughly understand it. Parents should emphasize the importance of paying attention to this to their children, the same way we do with bike helmets and wearing a seatbelt in a car.
No one expects something to go wrong but that's why we call them accidents.

Kind of like seatbelts. People complained when the law required cars in 1974 to have an interlock so if you didn't have your seatbelt fastened, the car wouldn't start. Then states started requiring drivers to wear seatbelts. But the safety they provide are worth it in my book, same with the muster drill. But I don't think anyone believes there shouldn't be some sort of safety requirement for passengers. Their issue is with what form it is in.

My niece and her family will be cruising in a few weeks for the first time since she was a child. I will ask her kids (8 & 15) if they remember what the emergency alarms consists of. (7 short blasts followed by one long one.)
JMHO but swinging by the muster station for a quick pic for 10 seconds doesn't stress the importance of it all.
I'm not surprised the USCG has an issue with it.

People don’t take any of the ways seriously. The ones that want to be informed will be and the ones that don’t care won’t be. Won’t matter which way. Just like with most things.

This is true but most people will only take it as seriously as the cruise line does. If the cruise line downplays its importance or blows it off, even fewer people will think it’s important info to know.

The last cruise we did in 2020 most of the people were messing around on their phones during it.

Love the new muster method, not keen on the old one due to as many mentioned squishing you up against everyone in the melting hot sun for quite a long time before the drill itself starts. Wouldn't mind as much if guaranteed to start at a certain time. I say do the drill for the folks that show up on time and go get the stragglers later - waiting for people that have no concern for anyone but themselves is frustrating.

So years ago, I went on the Top Chef cruise on the Celebrity cruise line. The way they sold the cruise came with the drink package. By the time that the safety drill came about, most people were already drunk and unable to focus anyway. I think that most people were repeat cruisers though and knew the drill.

I also think that anyone that has cruised before with Disney and are familiar with the ship and the procedures, should have a way to do a shorter version, like what it is now. But have the first time cruisers go to the muster stations and learn what they need to do.

That’s a great idea. If you’ve cruised in the past 18 months, do the quickie version. Everyone else gets the full spiel.

There's a video somewhere on the interwebs of a girl on a DCL ship completely clueless about the alarm bells. I seem to recall it was not a true emergency or drill, but the alarms got set off somehow-- But until you know it's not really an emergency, it should be treated as such.
