What is Second Life?

its a game, but its definitely not for under 13 yr olds.

Just turning 14 I know what i'm walking into but i'll take it for a spin. The school bus is just like one of these games.

Teen Second Life is just as bad-and in some ways worse than regular second life- so I'd stick to family-oriented games after coming from VMK.

Ill, don't join Second Life, it's a game for a bunch of no lives who are simply looking for a girl friend online. It's like their desperate escape, it's really just full of garbage, and the teen version isn't probably even played by teens. Just don't bother wasting your time on games like this, but I'm not you so do what you want. I and many people will probably advise you to stay away for games like this.

Only you know what is for you.
Well, I can not speak about the teen version, but the adult version.
My husband and run a business on SL there a lot more to it than girl hunting.. Yes there is a lot of adult content because there are mature areas.
However there are many PG areas so there is something for all tastes. SL does have a steep learning curve it took me a good two weeks to learn the ropes and a few months to learn the in's and outs of building and creating effects. Many schools are offering online classes though second life and I you can try online sports. If your into learning programing SL has it's own language it is like C+

(We have our own sim called Wishes named after a certain favorite show!
We create effects like weather and sell it there.
Anyway.. It is much more advanced than VMK Not for children at all!
You can buy land, build, create clothing, skins both PG and Realistic and create your own environment. When we created our own place we modeled it after a fun place we had been .We built our castle design with a glass roof it has a lake and mountains, a fireworks show, skydiving, snowboarding and ice skating and more you can ride a small boat around.

Teen SL should be the same environment but it should be PG everywhere,
If it is not then I would steer clear as well.
I would ask your parents to check to see if is for you or not.

Let's put it this way, SL is like the weird mail order contraptions in Disney cartoons. No intruction, no purpose, no fun included.

It's frightening & I'm a full fledged adult. My friends and I call it "The Dark Side". Besides, it's boring. There isn't actually anything to do there as far as I can tell.

yes I struggled with what to say yesterday about it LOL

I want to be on the record for saying my soon to be 14 year old is not permitted to play this game.

I do understand there is much that goes on in the game that isnt sick, but imagine the worst people you have run into on vmk, and then imagine they had no moderating to stop them from doing anything they want.

While a lot of people I know have found aspects of this game they enjoy enough to spend the majority of their time there. Some do indead make good money at what they call legitamate businesses.

As a parent If my child wants to play this game or and version of it - it will be after they turn 18 and move out of my house. I have spent some time here with friends just to see what it is about and it is impossible not to run into bad stuff, xxx content, grieffers (people that get a kick out of harrassing other players) alternative life styles that I don't approve of as well as it is open code so easy to have your stuff hacked.

As a person I know said about some of the content we see around us - you don't have to take the lid off the sewer to know it stinks.

This is an interesting question. I have struggled to respond to this as well.

Ill, thanks for asking this here in this forum. You respect the opinions of others to ask about this game. You have an a place to ask and find out.

My thoughts go to the kids who now are losing VMK and find Second Life the way you did. They may not have the ability to ask opinions or be supervised as well to prevent them from joining Second Life. Children seeking to find a virtual home to replace VMK and finding Second Life is a scary thought.

Very scary thought. Unfortunately, this is true for so many VMK kids. :sad2:

Ill,

I would just add as a parent here, that while our opinions will have more information on the game content, etc. - I would also suggest you talk with your parents before joining any new online community such as this. It will be good to have their approval and I'm sure they would like to know or have access to finding out the content as well. If you were one of our kids, I'd want to know what new online worlds you were exploring. :)

Oh, and I would not suggest Second Life for you. Also, just my opinion - but no way my kids will ever be allowed to play that game until they are old enough to be out of my house - :rotfl: yep, I am a mean mommy. :rotfl:

Princess

If your looking for a tropical island with a beach and a place to get away from it all. SL is known for beautiful sunsets and rises, it can be a very peaceful place. The graphics are awesome especially the water. Your pretty much left to yourself in find your way around and things to do. Their are many positive areas of the game and friends to be made. If your an adult and seriously considering joining I know a good blog you can read with some great tutorials. I have found my niche and so have many others. There is a lot of shopping and there are role-playing areas as well as combat zones for those who like that.
I agree that the average 14 would not be ready for Teen SL. Mine is not!
I would think even the Teen SL is more gear towards the high-school aged group of kids almost old enough to go to college. From what I have heard it is not for faint of heart.
No matter where you go there are people who cause trouble or do things you may not want to see. I seen things I wouldn't expect to see in the Disney parks; I had my Honeymoon in June little did I know about a certain group that comes then. O.o Would that stop me from going to disney not on your life?.. I do feel everyone needs a touch of the mouse!:wizard:
Wishes to you all!

Sorry I tend to get long winded
