What is Mission Space?

Last trip, DS and DH went on Mission Space, but I never went on it. DS doesn't even remember it...lol....but I think he liked it (didn't love it, but was ok).

What exactly is it? Is it simulation ride like Star Tours? Or more of a roller coaster or track ride? Also, is it bumpy or quick acceleration (if not a simulation ride)? Just wondering for health reasons and if its something we would all like or just DS.

Also, is orange or green the "easy" one?

Thanks.

It's basically a G-force (centrifugal force) ride but from inside the cabin you have a video screen that simulates you being shot into orbit/space and then returning to earth. You're playing the part of an astronaut and there's a little interactivity with pushing buttons/levers. No tracks, no coaster, you're just being spun around for the feeling of takeoff/orbit/space travel. If you are sensitive to spinning motions it's not the best.

Green is the "easy" one meaning it doesn't spin as fast (and therefore less G force on your body). Orange spins faster for higher g force.

FWIW, you can't tell you're spinning like you can when you're on the teacups or something like that. You just feel the g-forces on your body on the orange side.

The two sides used to be the same experience with just a difference in intensity. Now, the story is completely different too. The orange, intense side takes you to another planet and you have a mission to complete. The green, easy side just has you orbiting earth and you do feel a bit like you're floating around.

Yeah you have to be pretty sensitive to really "feel" it on the green side - i have a friend who has major issues with spinning motion, she wouldn't go anywhere near teacups or turkish twists or those kinds of rides. She was able to complete Green but she felt "off" for a while after exiting. But she's highly sensitive so I'd say the exception not the rule.

As mentioned, it is a centrifugal-type ride that simulates g-forces astronauts feel at launch. At least that's what the Orange (more intense version) is meant to do. It is part simulator in that you watch a video with first person view and press buttons (if you choose, otherwise it's all automatic).

That said, the G-forces are rather sustained and relatively high for the ordinary person (2.5). Certain coasters reach that level when you travel up the hill, but the forces aren't sustained.

I'm personally OK with the ride (not really prone to motion sickness), but I have felt certain effects, mainly a mild headache and slight imbalance shortly after getting off.

You can find other details, including possible side effects and maybe things that could interefere with any health issues:

If you're at all claustrophobic, you'll want to stay away from this ride. I didn't realize I was claustrophobic until the first time I rode the mild (green)version. I tried to go on it again a couple years later, even giving myself a little extra space when I strapped in, but I was so anxious...I lucked out and a cast member opened up our pod to get something the last person left inside...I said 'can I get out?' and bolted...and DD16 followed me as she's a bit claustrophobic too!

I agree, I will not be going on that one again because of the claustrophobia. After you sit down, the wall in front of you folds into your lap, making it impossible to get up. Ugh, my palms are sweating just thinking about it...

Green side does not spin, orange does. That being said, some people (like me) who never get motion sick on rides do so on even the green side. I was light headed for hours when I rode it last year for the first time since I was a teen.

we did green side one time years ago, found it to be too enclosed and still somewhat rough. one and done for us

Thank you for the responses. I'm really glad I asked as from the word "g-force", I know this ride is a no-no for me. I have health issues with my eyes and that is one of the things I need to be careful with, so really appreciate the explanation. And even if no issues, I'm not a fan of spinning rides....and am a bit claustrophobic. So definitely not for me.

Will see again if DS and DD want to ride it (or if they want FP for it) .

There’s probably a YouTube video out there if you want to watch it and make sure.
Agree with the claustrophobia- never knew I had that problem til this ride.

I have loved both the green and the orange over the years. I am fortunate that I don't have any problems with motion sickness or claustrophobia. I do have COPD, however, and that only meant that I had to remember, while riding orange, on take off to inhale heavier to counter the G-force that is being exerted. If you have never been an astronaut, it really feels and looks real. The green basically has very close to the same motions achieved by tilting the cabin back and forward. It used to be exactly the same ride as far as destination and story, but now green is different. I don't like it as well, but it really is OK. Orange goes to Mars and Green just circles the globe now. Along with everything else at WDW this requires what is a called a willing suspension of disbelief.

If you take the ride in Star Wars Land... Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run it is close to the same experience as a simulator but the cabin is wide open and not really confining at all. No Spinning or forced G-forces. All the feeling of acceleration is done by just tilting the cabin.

I kind of want to ride it again, but I remember being on the ride and talking myself through the panic and telling myself that in a few more seconds it was going to end and I would live...LOL. Definitely, in my opinion, one of the scarier rides in Disney for me. Actually, I don't think there is another one that really freaked me out like this one. It totally caught me off guard and it seemed to last a little longer than I had wanted it to. It's an awesome ride buy definitely not one for the lightweights.

The orange side would not be for you. That is where you experience the g-forces because that’s the side with the centrifugal forces.

The green side does not have the g-forces. It simply tips. So, you should be able to do that side. I am also a bit claustrophobic but the key is to keep looking forward at the screen, never sideways and I don’t notice it. Also, for those using the orange sides looking forward is the key to control after effects is again never look sideways during the ride.

Thank you! I actually asked similar question in Star Wars section but my post got merged with the main thread and thus, wasn't answered. Really appreciate the comparison (and that one sounds like it is fine for me).

Oh my gosh...thanks for sharing. Definitely not for me...and now I'm questioning how my son rode it last time (he was 9 at the time and does have a sensitive stomach...plus sounds very scary)

Thanks for clarifying. Just sounds like lots of work to "be able to ride it" so that you don't feel sick. Will still skip it myself and let DS, DH and DD decide (but will explain ride beforehand so they are not taken by surprise)

Mission Space Green
Soarin but around the globe higher up
with the lovely Gina Torres as guide

I did orange back when there was only orange. During the ride I was fine and I really enjoyed the experience. After I got off the ride, though--that was another story entirely. I was massively dizzy and had to sit for maybe 1/2 hour before I was able to get up and stumble to a bus back to the resort. I was finally cured by a Mickey bar, but that was hours later. BTW, the elapsed time was probably more curative than the Mickey bar, but Mickey helped!
