What is IMVU chat program?

So, my 11yr old DSD has received an invite from a friend to sign up for IMVU.com so they can chat/IM each other. Anyone know what this is? The email she got for the invite talks about "3D instant messaging". This is an IM program/website I haven't heard of before. I went to the website to find out more but to go further I have to create an account and I don't want to do that. Can anyone tell me anything about this? Thanks.

IMVU is what a lovechild of The Palace and AIM would look like, if they had chatsex.

I have tried IMVU, didn't really like it that much although I can see how a younger person might be attracted to it. When you sign up, you are given a certain number of 'points' to 'buy' things for your avatar...clothing, pets, etc. And you can hang ou t with your friends in different 'locations', like the mall, the coffee house, etc.

The only thing that really bothered me about IMVU is the chat bubbles. You have to use your mouse to 'fling' them off-screen (usually towards the 'ceiling' of whatever room you're in), because if you don't, then the screen gets cluttered with all the different chat bubbles.

Thanks for the reply . I'm trying to figure out how legitimate the site is. Sounds like it is fairly new and when it comes to chatting is not a whole lot different than any other messenger.
