What Is Hummus?

I admit the first time I tried it, I thought it was gross, but that's just because it was unfamiliar (and I didn't even know it was made with chick peas). I found myself going back to it again and again, and now I love it. I don't like any of the funky flavors, though.

Yum!

If I remember, they have a hummus sandwich at Columbia Harbor House don't they? I ate there in 2006 and remember it being good.

Yes, with coleslaw and a tomato on toasted bread...so good-we fix this at home all the time!

mmm...I love hummus. I like homemade the best (with lots of extra lemon and garlic)...but i've had good store bought. I would give it a try..you may be surprised!!

I smear it on turkey sandwiches in lieu of mayo to bring down the calorie count. It is a a great sub for high fat spreads.
I love mayo on a sandwich, but this really is a good sub, very creamy and such a nice flavor. I love hummus!! I didn't know there were so many people unfamiliar with it, thought it was a standard. I love reading from others with different tastes and experiences.

Try it, you may hate it, but :confused3. You never know!

Is now a bad time to bring up how delicious babaganoush can be ?

:goodvibes

Oh, I love hummus...but babaganoush...

That stuff was made in heaven!!!

I would urge everyone to try hummus at least once. It is a fairly mild garlic flavor. Its really really good stuff!!!

There's a Hummus Quad they sell at Trader Joe's, and let me tell ya, the Garlic Hummus and the Tomato Basil Hummus are absolutely delicious in that thing!!

I  that sandwich.

OP--I'd recommend picking some up at your local grocery store and give hummus a try. I often use it as a dip for pretzels and veggies. Hummus is a staple at our house.

I like babaganouch better than Hummus.:lovestruc

Its amazing there are still people who haven't tried Mediteranean food! My Gawd-i live in a smallish city and we-kids-friends -love this food and always have hummous at our family parties instead of traditional "dip"
:confused3

I am amazed myself. I thought everyone has eaten hummus at least once. :confused3 I like it (then again, I LOVE chickpeas and garlic). I like Baba better though. But DH doesn't like Baba since he hates eggplant. I certainly wouldn't consider hummus adventerous. It's kind of like considering salsa or guacamole adventeruous.

I love hummus
We get store bought- either seven spices, red pepper or lemon and garlic- these are our favs- on cerley and especially carrots- the sweet from the carrot and the tangy from the hummus seem to go together nice.

I think it is so funny how the hummus thread is so popular- who would have known

GO HUMMUS!!!

I love roasted red pepper hummus! I like Sabra...but our store has another brand that I like even more but can't remember it. Not a very adventurous cook--okay...not much of a cook period (technically should rephrase that love to cook just not clean up after)

Boma's hummus is the best I've ever had, expecially their black olive. Unfortunately I discovered it at the end of my meal.

Count me as another fan of Sabra. I also like it with pita chips. Makes for a very delicious snack.

What is Hummus?

Am I the only one here who has seen the movie "You Don't Mess With The Zohan?"

From imdb.com:

Exec 1: What's hummus?
Tom: It's a very tasty diarrhea-like substance.

That line just cracks me up.

(I've eaten it. I don't love it, but it's okay.)

Everyone forgot the second main ingredient, tahini!!! It is a sesame paste that is mixed in with the chick peas (humus is the word for chick-peas in Arabic as well as the dip itself), then comes the garlic lemon and salt to taste.

Enjoy!

Hummus is usually a puree of chick peas, sesame tahini, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil and other herbs and spices (often flat leaf parsley and cumin). As you've seen from other responses some hummus has added ingredients, like roasted red peppers.

If you like those flavors you may find it quite tasty. Personally, I'm a big fan of hummus, but I like to make my own (with extra garlic). The chick peas are very bland and really just create the base for the other flavors.

It is a "desert food" that is common to the middle east.

It is usually eaten as a dip or a spread. It is usually kind of thick (think almost a peanut butter consistency).

Hummus' taste can vary quite a bit depending on what is put into it and how much of those ingredients are added (like my extra garlicky version).

Try it - you may like it!

I was always put off to hummus until i tried it... and it's DELICIOUS. Another fan of Sabra here. With some pita bread? mmmmm.

Sam's Club sells a great roasted red pepper hummus. Hummus is the work of the devil...I bought that bag of baked pita chips (yes the huge one at Sam's) and their hummus and I couldn't put it down. My kids all looked at it and tough it looked so gross. My son said he would try it. He's 5 and is not an adventuous eater at all. Well he loves it with plain pita bread. It was the cutest thing to see this little guy that doesn't even like ketchup on his fries scarf down a huge bowl of hummus.
