What is emerald isle?

And does it cost anything? I always hear people talk about it but I have no clue what it is. Thanks.

It's a special card you get from National Car Rental that allows you to pick a car from the "Emerald Aisle", which frequently includes free upgrades.

Well, the "Emerald Isle" would be Ireland, Erin, Eire... you know, leprechauns and fiddle music, singing and good beer... all of those stereotypes.

Now, the Emerald Aisle would be National's program where you can skip the counter. Just sign up for Emerald Club so that they have all of your information (licence, payment, preferences), reserve a Standard or Midsize vehicle, and when you get to the rental location, you walk out the the section called "Emerald Aisle" choose any car, and drive to the exit, present your license and credit card, and away you go! Pretty cool, eh?

I've had my Emerald Club card for probably 10 years and have never had to pay the fee.
