What is early bird check in for Southwest?

What is early bird check in for Southwest? I thought you had to check in at the 24hr mark before your flight?

For $10 per person each way, you can use the EBCI service and it will automatically check you in 36 hours before your scheduled departure (and 12 hours before anyone not using EBCI). You will be assigned your boarding number(s) at that time and can view them/print out your boarding card starting at the 24-hour mark.
