Any suggestions on when to tip the servers, room host, etc? Should we do this on the very last day before debarkation or is it possible (and better) to do it prior to the last day? Any and all suggestions and info would be much appreciated!
Traditionally, like most cruise lines including Disney, tips are handed out during the last night's dinner. We were at Palo this night so handed off the envelopes to our teen children to give to our wait staff. We thanked them personally for all their service at breakfast the next morning. Do it either at Dinner or the debarkation breakfast. Either is appropriate. As far as the room steward tip, we left it on the bed before we went to dinner on the last night.
We had all our envelopes (they give you these in your room on Th. night I think) filled out and DH took them to dinner Friday night. We "discussed" whether or not to give $ to the Maitre D or whatever he was (I forget, he's mentioned as one who gets tipped). He did virtually nothing for us. Well, our (DH ) decicion was to not give him anything. Until DH saw that everyone else at our table had an envelope for him! Our table mates left their envelopes on the table Friday night, and on Saturday b'fast, DH handed our server, and asst. server their envelope and left the other on the table. Don't know if that's entirely kosher, but that's what we did.
We were unsure of this on our recent cruise as well. We felt a little uncomfortable giving it to them. Everyone at our table did it the last night at dinner when we were finished with dessert. The server and assistant server just went around the table to each couple, saying, "It's been a pleasure to serve you" and then we gave them their envelopes and thanked them for the wonderful service.
However, I noticed that they are were not as friendly the next day at breakfast as they usually were. I know it wasn't because our tips were inadequate, since we tipped above the recommended tip per person. Maybe since they already had the tip they didn't feel they needed to butter us up any longer.
We like to charge the recommended amounts early and then add additional cash as needed & hand out the envelopes at the end. This lets us avoid the long lines that form at Guest Services towards the end. However, on ouir 7-day cruise, we were told that we couldn't do it till Thurs. even though the info. in the Navigators said differently!

Bbgrizzle....as far as them not being friendly on Saturday.....I believe that they have far more responsiblities on Saturday morning than any other day and are very stressed. We had revolving servers Saturday morning. When we asked why, we were told that all the servers go through customs Saturday mornings and have specific times to show up in their cabins for clearance. Arvind was constantly watching the head server to keep track of the time and make sure his tables were covered, and here we were, wanting to chat and take pictures! Talk about stress! I've heard others comment on the "unfriendliness" on Saturday, and I just remembered....thought I'd mention it.
