I know what a pressed penny is, but what are the books? Do they hold the pressed pennies from around WDW? Are there THAT many that you need a book to hold them all?? My daughter would love that.

Yes, there is a fold over book that you can buy to hold all the different pressed pennies you collect. It has a plastic sleeve to slide the coin into. Don't remember exactly, but I think it costs about $8.50.

My DD just told me she thought the book was around $6 when she bought one in May...for sure it isn't more than $8!
Yes, there ARE that many pennies to be had!! Almost all major attractions have a machine with three choices! Not to mention all the different ones for the parks... We sort of got caught up in it and the girls got a lot of them, but not enough to fill up that book! Maybe next time... Oh! And then there are the pressed QUARTER machines if you're a big spender!!!

The books are $6.50 each as of last month, and available at virtually every gift shop in the World. I highly recommend getting one for each child with you, they made a fun and inexpensive souvenir. My DDs (5 & 9) really wanted to collect the pressed pennies on our trip, so they each bought a roll of quarters with allowance money and were allowed about 5 pennies a day each. They had a great time picking the most special ones to them, stowing them in the book, and comparing. They have looked at them many times since our return. It's worth it just for that reaction, but IMO the best part is that you keep them neat and don't lose them when they're stored in a book instead of Mom or Dad's pocket!

This sounds like the coolest thing!!! My DS8 & DS6 will love it. Another dumb question- how much does it cost to press a penny?
You mention a roll of quarters, do you also need to have the pennies? (Make that 2 dumb questions....)

Yes you need to supply the pennies and not just any pennies, you'll need 'Special Pennies'... Actually what you are looking for is pre-1982 pennies. 1982 and on, the US Mint made pennies out of copper and zinc, which can leave a zinc (silver colored) smear on your pressed penny.

The cost for a pressed penny is 51 cents, 2 quarters and a penny, but I guess you get the penny back. Pressed quarters are $1.25. I found this website to be helpful:

The books are really nice! And they are small and easy for the kids to keep in their pockets. Both my kids are looking forward to bringing them back to Disney on each trip!

Are there separate books for pressed pennies & quarters, or are there pages for quarters in the penny books?

In the books we bought back in 2000,which I believe are still the same, there is a page that holds a few quarters.

That sounds like so much fun! I never paid attention to those machines before. We are definately going to be collecting them when we go back! Thanks!

My 5 year old wants to collect these on our upcoming trip. She has already saved more than enough pennies, over 200 pre 1982 ones and we cleaned and polished them so they are ready to use. Also we have been saving all the quarters we have gotten whenever we got change back from a purchase and putting them in a zipock bag for her to use. We have quite a few saved but just to be sure I will pick up a few rolls from the bank before we go. Make sure you take enough pennies and quarters with you on your trip because you don't want to waste time in the parks trying to get change. I love the idea of collecting these and my daughter is so excited about it, we never even noticed the machines when we were there last year so now I made sure I know where most of them are located. www.liss.olm.net/ec/disney/ has a great list of where the machines are located and the designs they offer.

Please, Please, Please do yourself the favor of putting your childs name and/or home address inside your pressed penny book.

DS lost his at MGM and trying to find it among the gobs of others that were in lost and found was a bugger.

With a name and/or address inside, lost and found can easily identify it if you call - so you don't have to waste a trip there if they don't have it. AND - they will send it back to your house if it is not claimed and it has a name and address inside.

Super-Secret - shhhh !

The Belz Outlet Character stores have the pressed penny books from 2000-2001 (they don't have the year printed on them and I think they are nicer than the new ones - blue cover) on sale for $2.99 ! Just there two weeks ago, great buy (along with most of the other things in the outlets) - Stock up.

I LOVE these boards!!!

Each day I learn something new. I have a paper and pen next to the computer with a list of things to do.

This is now at the top of my list to do at Disney. Having many kids, this will be the perfect thing for them to do on our trip. They will have fun making and collecting the "pressed pennies" and they'll have great souvenirs without costing a fortune.

Thanks for this great idea.

I second this! Pressed penny books just went on my list of things to do at Disney. I think my son will love it....he's a collector, he loves to hoard collections of things.

If it weren't for this board, I'd be completely in the dark about everything at DW. Thanks to my friend, Janice, for pointing me in the direction of this board. *note to self....buy Janice a nice thank you gift*

Pressed pennies, mighty misters, brita fill and go bottles, lime green anything, tevas, sunscreen in wipes (who would have thunk it?).

These are a few of my DIS favorite things! And we'll have a more magical Disney experience because of them!

Thanks!

There are also books for pressed quarters only.

Tip to make the pressed penny hunt easier. In old film containers (or any container roughly that size), put 2 quarters, 1 penny, 2 quarters, 1 penny etc. Each container holds enough for about 10 pressings. It saves time, rather than getting out a bag of quarters, and a bag of pennies. And the contianers are easy for the kids to hold.

To avoid the silver colored zinc smear in newer pennies you should use pre-1982 pennies. However it is sometimes hard to come across anything but dull tarnished old pennies, so to return them to their copper color, soak the pennies in an acid like vinegar with a tsp of salt for about 30 minutes to remove the copper oxide (tarnish).

Does anyone get a book and pressed pennies for themselves? My 2 dd's will be doing this but I would like a set also.

Jodi

Does the book have spaces for the specific press? For instance, the State Quarter folio has a marked place for each state and when it will be (or was) released. Are the Disney penny books like that too, so you can check them off as you go? Or are they generic and a pressed penny just fits into any spot?

Thanks!
