what is a good size to email pictures?

I'm known as the parent that always has a camera and I take a lot of pictures of my kids' friends at parties, sports and school activities. parents are always asking me for copies. I started with uploading to snapfish and costco and telling them to download but some are not happy with the reduced image size. So I tried burning to CD but soon got tired of burning one or two pictures to one CD. Then I tried emailing but pictures from my XT average about 4 mb each, which is way too big to email more than one. I would like to reduce the pictures to a smaller size for emailing but still allow some basic edit and print out a decent 4x6. What size should I reduce the export size to?

A basic rule of thumb is to have 200-300 ppi for decent printing, so a 4x6 would be about 1200 x 1800. If any further editing is to be done then you might want to make the image a little larger.

The amount of JPG compression also affects the image size, I can usually see a difference when it drops below 75% or so.

I struggled with this as well. My parents and inlaws have a broadband connection so I'd upped the size of the photos I've been emailing to approximately 800x1200 images. My sister moved and had to switch to dialup (I cant imagine what that would be like) so instead of sending photos in 2 sizes I went with smugmug.

You can easily upload files in 1 size and they will be displayed in 4 sizes
100x67
400x267
600x400
800x533
plus the original size you upload it in.

The nice thing is that individuals can pick the size that works for them to view photos in. They can purchase prints form the site as well ,though I've not ever done that.

I recommend getting an account at PBase, Smugmug, or any of the other sites that let you upload full resolution images and allow users to view them at a variety of resolutions. I use smugmug and get several benefits from doing so.

1) I don't clog my friends inboxes. If they want the pictures, they can go see them and if they don't, I'm not wasting their resources.

2) The viewer has a say in what resolution they want rather than me predetermining it.

3) They can easily order prints online.

4) They can see an entire gallery of pictures, not just the handful that I send them.

5) I get a good offsite backup of my photos.

My smugmug account gives me virtually unlimited storage and an ample monthly bandwidth quota. The cost is pretty nominal. I'm not trying to sell SmugMug as I'm sure that there are many other sites with similar functionality like PBase or flickr.

The simplest, fastest is windows xp itself.

Click my computer
Go to where you have your photo stored
Select the photo(s) you want to send
On the left is a box called "file and photo tasks"
Click on "e-mail the selected items"
A "send mail" box will appear with two button tabs, the first one is selected by default.
There is a "show more option". If you click that you can select the size photo you want to send. The first button is also selected by default.

Click ok and E-mail is activated with the attachments (picture) added.

All you have to do is address the e-mail.

There is text in the text box with info. Just delete it, add your own text and send it.

We have Earthlink and when you click on the photo in your file to highlight it, not open it, there are options to send photo. Click on that and it will give you the option of make my pictures smaller or keep original file size. Click on the make my pictures smaller for e-mailing and it works just fine.
