The purpose of this Assignment is to get out and have fun using our cameras, maybe learning a few things along the way, so pictures should be new as often as possible (though if you have a relatively new picture that fits a category, you can use it). All cameras and skill levels are welcome.

We'll run until December 30th (and beyond). No prizes can be rewarded other than recognition for a job well done!

Where possible, please use pictures taken from 15 November 2013. If you do have a recent (2013’ish) picture already on file, by all means post it – but the intent of this assignment is to get out and about.
If you post a picture, please share what you did to take the picture irrespective of whether you shoot with a point and shoot or a dSLR. For those with a dSLR, please include your ISO, aperture and shutter speed; as well as a brief description of anything that might help others learn from your experience.

What I’m Focussed On - Merry Christmas Lights

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
This time of year, I start to think about pretty coloured lights, Christmas decorations and happy faces. For me, that means that my fingers start to twitch and I want to grab the camera and capture some of that Ho Ho Wow.

So, this assignment is all about Merry Christmas Lights. Please share what Christmas looks like through your lens.

Hope to see a few posts!

Hi PIO. This one will be fun to do. There are quite a few nice displays in the towns near me.:thumbsup2

This sounds fun!
And thank you for all the links you provided! As a newbie I appreciate them! :)

This is a great idea! I don't use DSLR (yet!) but with my Nikon I am able to capture some festive Christmasy photos! I found that using my Night Portrait or Night Landscape setting (with flash) or Indoor/Party setting were the best bet with these. Taken Dec 2013 at WDW

Thank you, PrincessInOz ! I finally upgraded my camera and have really been enjoying experimenting with it all around the World! I love your photographs too...makes me really want to see Christmas in Australia! That building light projection photo is stunning, impressive!

:woohoo:

Want to bump this up because it's a great thread!

So, I will post one more photo...

A little blurry, sorry. Holiday projection on Cindy's castle

Beautiful as always, Don. :flower3:

BTW - I did see the Nubble Lighthouse; way back in 2007. You're making me wish for a trip back to New England.

Weird question, but when did you take this picture? We were there last week (in the freezing cold)!
It's beautiful by the way!

Here are my outdoor Christmas lights on my house:

And my tree inside the house:

A little zoom fun:

All shots with a mirrorless camera (Sony NEX-5N) and 10-18mm lens, mounted on tripod. Aperture Priority mode, in-camera HDR set to +3EV for the indoor tree shot without the zoom effect. The zoom effect shot was taken on a tripod, starting with the lens at 18mm, then triggering a 15-second exposure, while zooming slowly from 18mm to 10mm during the first 7 seconds of the exposure.

Continuing the Christmas lights theme, here's the tree from Epcot Center taken Dec 6, all lit up (Camera - DSLR-A580, 18-250mm lens, tripod, F8, aperture priority, 3-exposure HDR blend in camera at 4sec, 2sec, and 8 sec):

And one more from Epcot that same night - these are fireworks, but since they are from the Holiday-themed Illuminations show, and in Christmas colors, I thought they were on topic for this thread! (DSLR-A580, 18-250mm lens, Manual mode, F20, 6 seconds, ISO100):
