I’m seriously considering selling my 300 AKL points to buy 200 direct SSR points. Am I crazy, is this possible, should I do it?? Not that I like SSR over AKL but I can see now there is no reason to own at AK when it is pretty easy to book anytime. And I would like direct points. How easy is it to sell?

I watch resale values - just out of interest, as we've never purchased via resale - and the AK resales float around $98-102/pp, which is what we purchased it for in '08. Judging by the avatar picture of your account, I am guessing you purchased after '08 so it would seems like selling AK to purchase at direct at SSR would be a loosing economic decision. JMO.

I don't think it's crazy, but do you care about December bookings? I seem to recall that you do. You can probably say goodbye to getting what you want at AKL during December if you don't own there. I'm sure SSR is perfectly lovely during the holidays, but I think AKL is considered one of the premier resorts to stay at during December.

I've never sold, but I don't think it is terribly difficult - I think the going rate at the more well known DVC brokers is 9.5% commission so, unless you scored a really good deal on your purchase (I know you purchased just late last year, but I don't remember the specifics), you can be out close to 10% of what you paid. So, might need to add that to the cost of flipping.

I’ve changed my mind on December bookings …I now aim to book at my home at BLT for New Year’s Eve and maybe Fourth of July. Wish I had purchased more BLT..if they were running this same special on BLT I would be writing the check as we speak. I would be purchasing the SSR for sleep around direct points.

Why do you say that ?
Because for us it would be a breakeven sale but I am guessing you bought after '08. If you bought resale then I am wrong. I just never think in resale terms. I will say currently owning AK for the value villas is a total waste. We now stay more at SSR than AKV because the value villas are always booked.

I did buy resale…96 per point

If that's the case, and you want direct points, I'd say there would be very little reason not to take advantage of this sale. I think it is a pretty good one, and I had a few moments myself where I contemplated selling all my resale CCV and buying direct SSR points.

Just make sure you're ok with the "drive off the lot" depreciation with SSR points. A lot of people don't want to buy RIV because of the difference between direct and resale prices, and the difference on this SSR sale is pretty actually pretty similar. But, it's certainly a low price point to get direct points and blue card benefits.

Based on current dues:
300 AKL points @ $10.16/ea = $3048/yr
200 SSR points @ $9.19/ea = $1838/yr

Your dues go down by $1210 per year and you get points that are totally unrestricted, and the blue card benefits. It's a quality vs. quantity proposition, and the only tradeoff I see is quantity. This is why direct vs. resale is no longer the no-brainer that it was a few years ago.

And as an aside, I like AKL but would never own there. Not only are the dues high, but the trajectory they're on is what concerns me more than anything (160pt contract used as an example below). I wouldn't be surprised if they see a BLT-like cost jump after its renovations are complete.

What is SSR's direct point purchase? Could the 300 point contract support the 200 point contract without additional outlay? The ability to purchase the Sorcerer's Pass would be a positive.

To buy SSR direct after incentives is 150 per point. Which yes, more than resale SSR, but they are direct

You're gonna get a hundred different answers on this board with a question like this. It's your money do what you want, but I have to ask is going from 300pts down to 200pts going to work with how you vacation?

I sold a contract once, and added on at the same time. It was not very hard, but my add on was a net increase in points at the same resort.

I would not downsize your points. Never reduce the number of points you have. Strive for excellence and press on, add on, reach ever higher...Excelsior! :teeth:

I may add more resale BLT points in the future..the only place I feel like I need home field advantage but I would love to own direct and this may be an all time low price. I can’t see it ever going below 150. Any time soon

Love it 😍 now only if I can justify the money. Hey, it’s only numbers on a piece of paper !

I wouldn’t. Not direct SSR anyway. Once you choose the direct purchase, it should be an active selling one. (The lower gap for some older resorts is gone now. 2020 OKW was at $165 when direct was up at $185 range for AKV, when I blue carded).

AKV is 2057. SSR 2054. The Club & Value options will keep AKV a great Home Resort. Plus first crack at the Jambo resort studios (for best savannah at a discount).
