I have noticed since I told a few people about my DVC purchase is that they all make the same remark oh timeshares are a pain. (they think its a traditional timeshare for a certain week type timeshare) Then when you explain in brief how DVC works they are like O.K. they may ask a few Questions and then.... Here it comes.... you can bring me (ha ha ha) I may like you but not that much. I hate how they say it like they are joking but you know there is a bit of that would be great in there voice. Then you think to yourself just last week they where saying I can't believe your going again.
I secretly laugh inside because certain people really think that you will let them use your point.

Well, one way to avoid their comments is to not tell them you own DVC! Just go all the time, say goodbye with a smile, and return with all your wonderful trip stories. Actually, go ahead and tell them. The price they pay seeing you enjoying your "timeshare" will far outweight the small price you pay for their "judging" you !:rotfl:

This is what came to mind when I read this.

Thought for the Day: THOSE WHO DISCOURAGE YOUR DREAMS LIKELY HAVE ABANDONED THEIR OWN.

The worst part about owning DVC is the 330 days from the time you book your reservation til the time your vacation actually starts..... Uhhhh, It's taking forever!!! :sad2:

:) I just don't mention DVC at work any more, but everyone asks when we are going again to the parks. These are folks who have been once and think that it is of course funny that we do it yearly. Unlike the beach vacations, Disney tends to follow you to the office in the form of family pics, figurines, music....it is a LIFESTYLE !!

People always wonder how we are able to take such wonderful vacations. I usually just casually comment that we are DVC members and then they start asking serious questions about DVC. :cool1:

The less said, the better. For whatever reason, some people may have had a bad experience with a Timeshare and feel that all vacation ownership is a scam.

We've been DVC members for 6 years, and we have found it interesting to learn that people my DH works with have also been members for many years--people that we never would have guessed would go to WDW frequently.

tell them "sure", as long as they take your on their next vacation 1st:laughing:

then steer them to the DVC rental board here;)

I actually keep a list of these people. There may be a time when we have points we can't use (hasn't happened yet) and these are the folks I'll call with the offer of "pick up the dues and you can have them." I tell them that as well - that if we have "extra" points I may give them a call, but they'll have to pay the annual fees.

Basically, the conversation goes like this "I don't have any extra time or room right now, but if you don't mind, I'll add you to the list I keep. There is a possibility that sometime in the future I'll need to rent out my timeshare, and if that happens, I'll call my friends and see if someone is willing to pay for my dues in exchange for the use. It wouldn't be free, but if it happens, it would still be a good deal."

i.e. I treat them fairly seriously, and tell them the parameters. Most people, treated seriously, say "sure, I might be interested if that happens."

The list contains friends, relatives and coworkers who would all be interested in a "Disney Deal" if one were to fall into their laps.

I love the people who say "Ugh....Disney is too exhausting....I could never go as often as you....I need a relaxing vacation." These are the people who go once or twice in their lifetime, stay at a value resort, and go to the parks from the second they wake up until it's time to go to sleep at night. No wonder they are exhausted! I politely just say that we don't go to the parks every single day and when we do, it's usually only for part of the day. We enjoy spending time at our DELUXE resort, which is an experience in itself.

Then they either look at me like I'm lying to them or they just shut up. ;)

I love the DIS! For all the people who respond and just get it. Now here comes my random thoughts on the love of my new purchase. I feel dollar for dollar WDW is the best value for my family, others think we may have money (I wish) I call it being smart. As far as DVC goes it was the right choice for my husband and I. As long as my points allow I would love to have family and friends join my family on vacation it just bugs me that some people thought that I would give up my vacation so they could use it.

I think uninformed people think that "timeshares" are paid for and done. Like if you owned a beach house and it was just sitting there empty when you aren't there. They don't appreciate that there was a substantial investment and yearly fee, that you are basically pre-paying your vacation.

Just respond that you prepaid your vacation days and you plan to use all of them, but if you ever have unused time you would be happy to rent it to them!

And, quite honestly, even with timeshares a lot of people have timeshares that don't get used. If it isn't going to be used, there doesn't seem any harm it letting a friend know that you might be interested in using it. A little rude as its usually done, particularly if its a pretty casual acquaintence....

We've had very lovely vacations off other peoples "unable to use it or willing to share it" vacation property.

Yes, it hasn't happened to me, but DSis has had quite a few nice vacations for the cost of whatever it is to book the time because relatives of her SO couldn't use their time! Wow!
