"What I learned from the DIS" - Spring Break 06 - **5/12 Final Day w/pics, Page 9**

Someone started a thread a while back about what you do when you first arrive at Disney. We are of the unpacking mentality. Let’s make it home away from home – nope, we aren’t DVC – but we still like to “get all situated” as my DH puts it. So I unpack the gross “Lil Milk” and put it in the fridge. Quick aside: This morning I gave my kids the last of the Lil Milk’s for breakfast before school. DD7 asked if I could keep buying them. She said they were really good. I took her word for it. I’m not trying them. Anyway, back to unpacking. Everyone gets a drawer and before long all suitcases are empty, toiletries line the bathroom counter, and the pillows from home are on the bed. We are good to go. After I unpack the bread and peanut butter for sandwiches to actually take into the park. In a Tupperware container so they don’t get squished in my backpack. If that ain’t redneck, I don’t know what is. But then again I’m from Georgia. Born and raised. Go Dawgs. Go Braves. Go Nascar. I actually have an uncle who wears a t-shirt that says “I’m a Redneck and proud of it.” That’s a true statement.

We are on our way to Epcot for lunch, a quick check of the crowd levels (this is our first busy season trip), and to pick up my DDE card. That can only be picked up at the entrance to Epcot – this I also learned from the DIS. Then we can ride the monorail (DS3’s favorite ride) over to MK and pick up some fastpasses to be used later after dinner at California Grill. Now all you Fast Pass return-time Nazis, go ahead and flame away. Yep, I said it. We went to MK, got FP’s for SM and BL and – gasp! – did not use them until about 11:00 PM. And it was a brilliant move!! A move we exercised the ENTIRE week for just about EVERY attraction that has FP.

Lunch was uneventful – burger at the Electric Umbrella. And then disaster struck. My sweet little DS wanted to ride the “golf ball”. DH is a big golfer – loves the sport, plays frequently, has a low handicap and has shared this love with DS. So when you are three and you see a huge white ball with dimples in it, what else do you think it represents? Another aside here: My little man has my heart. Now DD is my best buddy – we share a love for shopping, princess movies, girly things and shoes. She is compliant, a pleaser, and quality time with me is, for right now, one of her favorite things. Quit laughing all you parents of teens – I know my time is coming. Anyway, my DS is just a joy. In a different way. I say the sky is blue, he says its red. Because that’s his first favorite color. DH and I affectionately, behind his back of course, call him delusional. He comes up with the strangest things to say. But I love him immensely – and I already dislike his future wife. I look at girls in his preschool class as hoochies that will eventually take him away from me. So if my little guy wants to ride the big golf ball – so be it. We hop on. It’s a walk-on. We all know why.

Forty-five very precious, and yet wasted, minutes later, we are walking down the stairs from the top of Spaceship Earth to exit a ride that has broken down while we are on it. We head to the exit to shake off the frustration by riding the monorail to MK. “Por favor, mantanganse alejadro de las puertas.” I’m sure I botched the spelling, but I LOOOOVE that. It makes me smile. DD7 and I always mouth it together – we look like the ultimate Disney geeks when we do, and DH has asked that we stop, but no can do. I have to. Well, we get to the TTC, switch monorails and ask to ride in the front – SCORE!!! No one has asked and we are granted seats in the front – where the monorail driver gives us the most valuable tip we get all week. Sorry – I know that I’m really doing you wrong, but if I tell you the tip, I’d have to kill you. And there’s a whole lot of you. Actually not so much actually reading this report, but you know what I mean.

We arrive at the MK and I ask the first CM I see, “What time is the 3:00 parade?” Hee Hee. He says 3:00 and we head over to SM and BL for out FP’s. We double score using our tip from the friendly CM on the monorail, and ride the TTA as our inaugural MK ride – weak, I know – but it was crowded and that was all we could do.

Back to the YC for a nap, and then, bundled in our ski resort finery, we are on the bus to MK to have dinner at California Grill and watch the fireworks. Despite all the poor-mouthin’ of CG I have heard on the DIS, we have a great experience. We are seated almost immediately, by the window, great service, great meal. It is far too cold to watch Wishes from the observation deck, so we watch while we eat, pay our check that is discounted by 20%, and hop the monorail for the Kingdom. We arrive just as the best parade music of all time is starting up. Spectromagic. I love it – I studied music in college and I think one of the things I appreciate the most about Disney is the quality of the music. From the movie sountracks, to the parade music, to the ride music, even the music on the website – everything is good, quality stuff. I even blasted the Spectromagic soundtrack this morning in my car as I drove to meet my running buddy. It will be on my MP3 player by the end of the day. Good stuff.

But Spectro is not on the agenda tonight even thought it is 11:00pm and we practically have the parade route to ourselves. We go to the Astro Orbiters because DS really wants to and that line is typically really slow during the day. Next thing you know, we are flying over the Magic Kingdom, watching and hearing Spectro from the air, with 7 full days ahead of us. Life is good. I am blessed. I look at my family and thank God for them and how much He has blessed us. I am overflowing with joy.

After a ride on SM and BL, we happily hop on the bus to the YC and turn in for the night knowing that we can sleep in the next morning. We only have the Hoop Dee Doo on the agenda and tomorrow promises to be fun. Sweet dreams, sweet family.

Next up – Day Two: A ride on the Surrey Bike (or Ode to Zzub) and Hoop Dee Doo
What I learned from the DIS:

1.That my DDE card has to be picked up from the ticket counter at the entrance to Epcot.
2.That you can return WAAAAAY after the FP return time expires and still get on the ride.
3.That you should ask for a window seat at CG.
4.That Disney can make you happy in ways the “real world” just doesn’t. That it is precious quality time with your family and despite the incredible dent it puts in your budget, it is worth every penny.

Enjoying your reports ~ Keep em comin.

Jamal - Have you thought of a name for us yet? We bring new meaning to "stay at home". I stayed at home because that's where the computer is!!
We checked in at YC on Sat. 3/25. Maybe we saw each other!!

Katy - Tour Guide Mike is a website that you can join for about $20 - I think cheaper for DISers now that he is a sponsor. He truly knows TONS about Disney. Lots of it seems like common sense once you hear him say it, but all week long, DH and I would comment on how TGM made a BIG difference. So yeah, even the Disney veterans can learn something from him! He has a link at the top of the forums.

And Zzub - I feel like a celebrity has given me his autograph. By the way, we had lunch one day at Norway and as we came around the corner to check in, DH looked at Maelstrom and said "Maelstrom is a Fastpass?" Loved it.

Thanks for all the responses - it is great fun to relive our trip and share it with you!!

OMG, Nicolemarie, we were on the same ride!! I'm a day or two behind you on the TR since we checked in Thurs the 23rd, but we walked down the infernal golfball with you!! I don't know if you saw them, but I felt sooo sorry for the non-ambulatory guest and her DH. I really wonder how they got down! I still can't believe we were both on that ride...:)

Oh, we were at the Poly so our paths probably didn't cross there.

You're motivating me to neglect my home and hearth some more and get back to the all-important TR! I wrote part 2 last night and will get to 3 today, I hope. It will be a long TR!

I am still pondering a name but am open to ideas. Maybe one will reveal itself as we all read and write this week.

Loving sharing your adevntures! Jamal

You know, NicoleMarie and Jamal, you really can stretch this stay at home thing out until they're teenagers, even ...

I know someday I'll have to work more outside the home. Maybe something with computers would be good ;)

I don't know about y'all, but I sat in my robe until 11:30 this morning reading, writing and typing.

Don't tell DH!

“I’m a Redneck and proud of it.”
Yup. That about sums up my view on life. I'm not sure I'd wear the shirt, though. "Vote for Pedro" I'll wear but boasting about my red neck, not so sure.

I'm with your husband on "getting situated," (sit-che-ated is the correct pronunciation). I don't know what it is about arriving at Disney World and unpacking that is so much fun. Actually, I unpack in any hotel room I'm in for more than 3 days. That's the rule: 3 days and you unpack. 1 day is not worth the effort. 2 days it's optional. But unpacking at Disney is especially enjoyable. It feels like you're moving in and staying a while. And who doesn't want to stay a while at Disney World?

Re: using Fastpasses after the Fastpass window: pipe down, would you?! We discovered this secret two trips ago and have been mum ever since. When word gets out everyone will be doing it and then it'll be the 15th floor Contemporary observation deck all over again. From now on when people ask, you don't know nothing about fastpass, capiche?

nicolemarie -
Nice start to the report - I love seeing the highlighted tips that helped you!

Where ya from, huh? huh? Central Georgia, Western Georgia, Eastern Georgia, where? I freely admit that I try to identify those others who might be out there and live close by - I'm compiling a list. When we reach 100 (I'm up to 5 including myself) - then I'm going to start a thread on the community board like the Chicago-ites have.

Thanks for taking the time to write your report. I love the things you've learned from the DIS at the end. My favorite part is your enthusiasm and obvious love of Disney and your family. I am looking forward to more installments!

I love to unpack too and put everything away. The rest of my family lives out of their suitcases. Then they have trouble with their dirty clothes and they end up taking the little white bags and stuffing them that the room has and the bags eventually rip. I can't get it through in their heads that clean clothes goes in the dressers and then you can put your dirty clothes in your traveling bags. My oldest dd is the overpacker-if you forget something like socks-she has over a zillion pair-everyone eventually borrows something from her. Gotta love her.

I'll stop babbling now-thanks for doing a Trip Report.

Oh, I am so relieved to find out I'm not the only one who's ostensibly working her fanny off around the house but parks it in front of the computer more often than not. I do get dressed to walk DD to the bus stop for 7:55 a.m., but I'd be in my robe if it was an option. Jamal, I hope you can come up with a name for this affliction soon!

Thanks, ZZUB, for turning me onto this report. I'm enjoying it, Nicolemarie! All you Rednecks are making me homesick. DH dragged the family up here to the Chicago area for his job, and I'm angling to get us back to TN any way possible. You can take a girl out of the South, but you'll never get the South out of the girl!

nicolemarie - great report!

OMG we are so similar! My DH is a major anal-retentive type guy! We have so many types of wipes around, I should buy stock! I too have a DD and DS, and am a stay at home DISer.....I've heard the same things from my DH about staying home.
Definately have to "git sich-e-ated" when arriving at a hotel.
And we used to live in Georgia - north of Atlanta - LOVED it there!

Looking forward to the next installment.

Mark, Mark, Mark...don't you remember me? We PM'd a while back when you invited me to your church because we both live in that great armpit of the South - Macon.

So I am a Maconite - and I now I'm a passholder, too. So maybe we can join the Whirlwind Trippers sometime!!

NicoleMarie - great trip report! Looking forward to more!

*chuckles at self*

Disney geek inventory (mine):

Excel spreadsheet detailing all information and confirmation numbers

including flight, hotel, ADRS, cancelled ADR numbers (yes I have one already), park tickets

tour guide Mike AVP info... endless

Another spreadsheet to run dining options through for ADRS not yet made (June will be here quicker than I know)

Timeline notations for buying MVMCP tickets, and CP at Epcot.

Checklist of ADRs requiring pre-payment

Notes of all "Dis stuff" like Alien Green paint samples, ribbon in case we decide to rent a stroller

Honorary membership in the DMVC, gotta have my java afterall

Oh and my handy Passporter to put it all in.

Only trouble is the closer it comes, the more I question whether I should chuck the dining plan and get one AP, the discounts, and regular park hoppers for the family... so we can come again... next year because we have an AP afterall... and I just might happen to show DH the VWL while we are there and he will just really love it and want to buy into DVC. Yep that AP is looking better all the time...
:cloud9:

Awesome report.... keep on typin' !

We were there at the same time. Got home last night. It's always fun to read someone else's perspective. Didn't even consider swimming until mid-week. Typhoon was warm(ish) but Blizzard was just that (brrrr). I hate cold pool water!!!
