One thing we will be ordering is the fillet with mac and cheese. What else do you recommend as our second entree. Also, the ostrich fillet sounds good. Is it worth paying OOP for it as we only have the regular dining plan, or should we just stick to entrees and desserts?

Thanks.

Personally, I think Jiko's appetizers are a 100 times better than the entrees. The entrees are good, don't want to be flamed, but the appetizers are very unique. So yes, I would pay OOP for an appetizer. The flatbreads are excellent but I'm very fond of the Taste of Africa. We've always been able to get a sampler platter of the other appetizers upon request. I love the samosas.

The soups here are always top notch. They change frequently but I've never had a soup here I did not like.

Of the entrees, the ones that I have tried that are still on the current menu are the filet, the short ribs, the chicken, the halibut, the swordfish and the scallops. I'm not a huge meat eater and prefer fish but I've been underwhelmed with the fish entrees here. The chicken was spicy so if you don't like a heavy spice, I'd stay clear of it. The filet and the ribs were both excellent; I've had the filet 3 times now and it has not always been consistent, sometimes it's much better but it's always at least good.

I've not had any dessert here that thrilled me. I enjoy desserts but the ones here are some of my least favorites of any of the signatures, I don't know why. The cheese selection is very good; not sure if they allow that as a dessert choice on the dining plan (we generally do not do dining plans).

I hope you enjoy your meal here. The restaurant is beautiful and we always enjoy an evening spent at Jiko. If you like wine, they have an amazing selection.

I agree with a previous poster that the appetizers at Jiko are outstanding and I would pay out of pocket for them. I've had the tuna tartar (don't think it's on the menu anymore:sad1:) and the kalamata olive flatbread appetizers. They were both sooo good. I've also had the steak and macaroni and cheese and the maize crusted fish. Personally I preferred the fish. My macaroni and cheese was not done and was very crunchy. Steak was good though and I had a wine flight that was outstanding. For dessert I got the chocolate pistachio brulee both times.

My daughter LOVED,LOVED, LOVED the halibut. I had the shrimp and it was very good and very spicy. Enjoy your meal!

I love the appetizers as well - I have gotten the BBQ Chicken Flatbread as a meal more than once ;)
Probably my favorite entree is the Chermoula Chicken. I've had it many times and it's always been delicious! I love the seasoning and the preserved lemons :cloud9:

I also feel that paying OOP for appetizers is a great idea at Jiko. I love the barbeque chicken flatbread.
I have always ordered the Filet and Mac n Cheese. I had it on my first visit and loved it so much I lookf forward to it.
Enjoy

When you guys state some of the food is spicy, do you mean hot spices or exotic spices? I'm adventurous & will try anything w/ exotic spices, but I'm not a fan of hot spices. IMHO, hot spices overshadow the taste of the food. All I taste is heat. If you are referring to hot spices, which menu items should I avoid? TIA :)

This is a great idea! How do you order this, & what are your options & limitations?

I feel the exact same way and I've never had anything at Jiko that was hot spicy :thumbsup2

ITA. Our last trip I think our big group ordered one of almost every app for sharing, so much fun. Everything else is good too, love the SA wines. Jiko remains on our "must do" list. FWIW.

PLEASE try the ostrich. It's wonderful. We also really enjoy the cheese plate at Jiko.

Short ribs are my suggestion for second entree, but we're not "fish" people, so I'd bet the fish dishes would be wonderful if you're a fan.

For dessert, I cannot stress this enough, the homemade lemon curd is enough to bring me back trip after trip after trip...it is absolutely heavenly.

There have not been options/limitations. They just made up the sampler platter that has a few pieces of each of the appetizers that are not the flatbreads nor the Taste of Africa samplings.

Thanks, we'll try that. I'm glad you mentioned it. :cool1:

DH and I both got the filet with Mac & Cheese - It was out of this world. I am sure I'll order that again this year.

Both times I've gone there I've really enjoyed the taste of africa, and the filet. I just don't see why the 2nd time (2008) they put this sauce on the filet. :confused3 It's such a beautiful piece of meat that was so flavorful on its own... I'd definitely recommend it without the sauce. For some odd reason I can't remember a darn thing about the desserts!
