What happens to the points?

This is probably an easy question. Here is the situation. I want to book for Oct 2014. My use year is Feb. If I book at my home resort 11 months out for say 100 points, but switch to another resort at 7 months for 75 points, what happens to those 25 points? Am I still within the time frame that those points will be put back into my account to be banked for later use? Or, do they get put in some holding bank and need to be used within a certain time frame?

Assuming you're using your Feb 2014 points for the Oct 2014 reservations, the points you'd save with the switch at 7 months would be returned to your account to either use otherwise in the use year, or to bank into the Feb 2015 use year at your discretion.

The only time points go into holding, is if you change the reservation less than 31 days before travel. I just did this a couple weeks ago for a seven month resort change. Points immediately popped back into my current use year online when I canceled the original reservation, and I could use them to book the other reservation. Hope this is clear...

Also worth mentioning, October is high demand DVC season. Be certain what you want to switch to is available before you cancel the original reservation, and that a duplicate of your original reservation is still also available online to book.

It's not a guarantee- both could still get snapped up in those few seconds between when you cancel and when you rebook- but it would be a bummer to cancel your reservation, not be able to get your switch, then not be able to move back to your original plan...!!!

As for October, I have learned that. We have enough points that I can book the second reservation before cancelling the first to ensure that we have at least one reservation.
