The Magic Kingdom's New Fantasyland 'Be Our Guest Restaurant' is still exceptionally popular, with the lunch queue starting to form at park opening. Now it's summer things are getting both hot and wet. Disney has you covered, and cast members are now handing out large Disney Golf umbrellas to those in the queue. Click link for photos and more details.
Disney magic is not all lost. :thumbsup2

At least they thought ahead about that sorta thing. I can just imagine how many sunburns, heat-related sicknesses, and complaints this reduced. 10 Points to Disney! :thumbsup2

Man, those lines look brutal at those angles.

At least they thought ahead about that sorta thing. . .

1) If they had thought ahead, they would have
. . . a walkway with a covered canopy
. . . other forms of shade
. . . large misting fans
. . . TV screens with videos
2) This is another goof by Imagineers. *
. . . not planning for long lines
. . . not panning for guest comfort

* IMHO, sounds like another Joe Rohde design.

~This! I really thought the OP was being sarcastic, I don't see anything magical about this, it looks a mess. With that said, I do think it's a nice gesture for Disney to provide umbrellas for shade, but "magical?" Far from it.

I was thinking the same thing, but then again, these suggestions/solutions would completely destroy the feel of the attraction, no?

That line of umbrellas is not doing much for the feel, IMO. I think that if theyre was a little bit of forethought the queue could have been designed to match the theme of the restaurant. it is being treated as though it was an attraction, after all.

I realize that the imagineers may not have known that this restaurant was going to be such a star attraction when the design was first presented. It could not have taken that long to see that BOG was not just a restaurant to Fantasyland fans, and then made adjustments to manage the crowds in a more appropriate manner.

That looks ridiculous! I think they could have come up with a tasteful awning type cover, similar to Haunted Mansion. My first thought was do the umbrellas get handed out at some point and then when the guests get to a certain point a CM takes it and runs it to the back of the line for another sweaty exhausted guest. I assume when it rains there are no giant golf umbrellas available. :rotfl2:

Very amateur hour and last minute looking. Not very thought out.

Mightn't the umbrellas be a temporary stop-gap between now and the completion of the MyMagic+ rollout? It's possible other contingencies for long lines weren't taken up due to affecting the feel of the restaurant and the plan for lines to be moved more into the virtual realm with the new system.:confused3

excellent point! I also agree that any awnings would interfere with the feel of the area. And agree that the umbrellas don't look good either. I guess we just need tougher tourists!

Or "The Dome" ;)

Will you be able to Fastpass+ an umbrella? What tier will that be?

They could have provided shade with trees, had a covered bridge, or even little thatched roofs. Or provided a bigger lobby to hold more guest.

This is actually exactly what happens. I went with my cousin and her daughter last week and it was literally being handed one at the end of the bridge from a rolling cart being pushed by a CM, who then went down to the front, collected a few, and came back. It was extremely uncomfortable because you keep bumping in to other guests umbrellas, and many let their kids hold them which went about as well as you can expect.

They also had two large water coolers with paper cups but by the time we got there they were both totally empty with no sign of being refilled. Luckily they DO do a good job of moving the line pretty quick there. We were across the bridge in about a half hour I'd say.

I can sell you 200 DVU(Disney Vacation Umbrella) points a year for 30 years for $750.

Many of us shook our heads in disbelief when they debuted the queue as we quickly realized Disney built a solar oven for the queue. I doubt they can covert it to a period look covered bridge without closing it, and thus the restaurant, for a few months. If the bridge foundation can't support the weight of covering the bridge it would take much longer.

I'm kinda assuming someone in SoCal called the shots on that and not someone who has actually has had to stand in the Florida midday summer sun for hours and has also experienced the regularity of summer tropical rainstorms.

ITA it's not like they did not know it was going to be popular!

OKAY the FEEL of the attraction will be even more spoiled if they are constantly bringing in EMT's to pull out bodies on a stretcher too! They just annoy me when they do stupid things like this.

OH and btw if they give me an umbrella I am KEEPING IT!! YEP I am! If we all keep the umbrellas then they will have to fix the problem but my guess is they have a chip in them that will set off an alarm and you will be banned from the park for eternity.

If they had thought ahead they wouldn't need to be passing out umbrellas as it would have been in the shade.

That line is about an hour from one end of the bridge to the other.
