What happens to my borrowed points?

DVC newbie here. We have 200 points - Oct UY at SSR. In August of 2019 we are planning a large family trip with 7 adults, 5 children. I was looking at getting 2- 2BR villas at SSR. To do this I would need to borrow 118 points from 2020. However, it would be nice to stay together (we are a very close family, lol). I was thinking that at the 7 month mark, if available, I would change my reservation to a Grand Villa at OKW. This would only require borrowing 58 points instead of 118. My question is what happens to the extra 60 borrowed points? Do I need to use them before the end of September 2019? Do they get put back into 2020? Do I lose them? I am not sure what to do and my 11 month booking time is getting close. Please help!

Points borrowed will stay where you put them. They will expire at the end of the new UY.

Once borrowed, points remain in the use year into which they were borrowed.

The points borrowed from 2020 would expire at the end of your 2019 use year (9/30/2020).

My advice is to wait until the 7 month window opens to book if you really want the OKW GV. SSR 2 bedrooms are the last to fill. You should be able to book them at 7 months if your GV isn't available.

An alternative is to rent OKW points and book in the 11 month window. You could rent out your SSR points to cover the cost. You would have to rent out more than OKW costs to cover the difference, but you would be e!eliminating the risk of having points in 2019 that you can't use. You would also lose direct control of the reservation if you rent.

Good luck!

Couldn’t OP bank 60 of his current year points instead if the GV came through? So keep the borrowed points for this reservation and bank the others? Will member services let you work this out?

Yes. We assumed the OP didn't have 2018 use year points to bank.

But your question made me think about the OP's question a little harder, and there is a solution that doesn't involve leaving points in 2019 if the SSR 2 bedrooms are booked at 11 months and the OKW GV is available at 7.

OP, after the GV reservation is made, call MS and ask to have all of the borrowed points used for the GV reservation. The returned points will then be current use year points and those can be banked to 2020. When banked, they can be used between 10/1/2020 and 9/30/2021.

limace, that's probably what you meant since 2019 would be the current use year for the reservation the OP wants to make. So thank you. :)

Yes-that’s what I meant! You said it much more clearly than I was able to :).

CarolMN, is correct. We do not have 2018 points till our new UY starts in October. So...next month I will book the 2 - 2 BR at SSR at my 11 month mark. At 7 months call MS and switch to the OKW GV but ask to use my borrowed points first. Since I borrowed 118 points I will only be using 140 of my 2019 points, so I can then bank 60 points into 2020. Am I understanding this correctly?

With an October use year, August 2019 would be in your 2018 use year. You can use banked 2017, current 2018, borrowed 2019. 2020 could only be borrowed for a stay 10/1/2019 or after.

2018 and 2019 are already in your account, no waiting needed.

Yes, but, as they have said, if you book VGF at the 7 month window, you should be able to bank current use year points to move them into the Next year, to replace what you have borrowed. Though they are then BANKED and must then used before the end of that use year.

However, they are also right that August 2019 is NOT in your 2019 use year. It is within your 2018 use year. If your use year starts in October 2018, then that is the 2018 use year, which extends for 12 months from that point.

An Aug 2019 trip will fall in your Oct 2018 UY. You cannot borrow Oct 2020 points for that trip. You can borrow Oct 2019 points for that trip or use banked Oct 2017 points for the trip if you had any.

Aside from the borrowing issues above, at 7 months you are very likely to be able to book an SSR 2 bed in August. Thus you may just want to take the risk and book one, then amend that booking to a grand villa at OKW dead on 7 months, booking another 2 bed SSR if the grand villa isn't available. In fact you could check the day before the 7 month.window and if the grand villa isn't available, book the second 2 bed SSR then.
