What happens if we cancel?

We are planning on making a reservation for a week in a 1br at Animal Kingdom in March of 2014 for my kids spring break. If for some reason we have to cancel that reservation, what will happen to our points? We live in CA and have only used our points at the Disneyland hotels and the Disney Cruise.

Thank you!

depends on how far in advance you cancel and where you are in your use year (are you still within your banking window in the first 8 months)?

We are a December use year. Say we cancel in January 2014. Do the points just go back to our account or do they become something else? I am only concerned because it is difficult for my husband to get time off and they only let us know 6-8 weeks ahead of time.

If you cancel in January, the points go back into the current use year, so you can use them again by November 30. Note if you borrowed any points from next use year or used any baked from the previous, they stay in the current year so they too need to be used by 11/30/14.

If you cancel 30 days - 1 day before check in, the points go into a Holding Account. That means you can use them for exchange (DCL, etc.) or to book a new DVC 60 days or fewer before checkin. In any case, the points expire at the end of your UY (11/30/14).

And the implication here is that if they were originally DEC 2013 points, you could bank them into DEC 2014 use year if you did so by your normal banking deadline (July, I think). So, as long as you cancelled your reservation more than 30 days before your arrival, you preserve your banking flexibility if they were originally current UY points (e.g. not banked/borrowed).
