Hi There,

I hope you guys can all help, as I don't want to get into a bad situation, and you all know more than me!
They made it way to easy to purchase direct, and here I am with a 150 pt RIV contract- I know we want to buy in, have done tons and tons of research but I was planning on waiting a few months.

What made it easy to say "okay" now is that we are already going to AUL in 2 weeks regardless. They have told me that they can convert my stay and use my points instead of cash for our AUL trip, but since it is within 30 days of our travel date, I cannot cancel and get my points back (I don't know all of the rules yet, but I would have to use them within 60 days). There is no chance of the AUL trip getting cancelled- we would be going whether we use points or cash.

We are still in our 10 days cancellation period for our actual DVC contract though, and there is a chance we back out of our DVC purchase now and wait a little longer.

What happens if I go ahead and book AUL on points and then were to cancel my DVC contract before the 10 days period is up? I know I would lose the reservation, but is there any other issues since the trip is less than 30 days out?

Thank you!!

There would be no harm in canceling the contract m, as that reservation would also cancel. That being said DVC points at AUL can be a good value when compared to rack rates. It’s a personal decision and if you don’t feel good about it cancel it, but just look at your cash cost at AUL and decide what makes the most sense.

Nothing - it will all just cancel.

FYI - If the timing were a little different so that you took the trip right now and were still in the time to cancel the purchase when you got back then you'd have to pay them for the trip.

Did they already convert your stay? The only risk is that the room is gone. Not sure what cash stays look like right now but I would suspect you could just book another room?

I wouldn't let that determine if you buy DVC or not though. Its part of the math but you are going to own DVC for years to come while this is just a single stay so be sure you want to purchase.

You can also always buy at a different resort you don't have to buy RIV and even further while you couldn't use your resale points for this upcoming stay you could always buy resale and save possibly the equivalent of your AUL room.

Thanks all! We decided to stick with DVC- we knew we wanted to buy in in the coming months regardless! So we are officially owners at RIV- we definitely did our research on home resorts and resale restrictions and everything...I HATE the resell restrictions on RIV. That was mainly what was holding me back there, but I love the resort! Hopefully this wont' be our last trip to aulani eiether!

I realize the restrictions are an issue, and that is why I did not purchase RIV direct. However, I purchased OKW to be able to use direct points at RIV and have already stayed. Since you are direct, you will use your home resort, LOVE IT, and also have access to the other resorts. Only during resale will you have the restrictions as a possible issue. Remember though, you bought for YOUR use. If you are young (I'm not) and have many more trips, your value is there. And: the direct price only goes up. Incentives come, a little less advantageous than the previous, but the price does not go down.

If you want to cancel, cancel. Don't make any reservations. Be aware that cancellation to be valid must be writing. You should send both an email and a letter (which needs to be postmarked no later than the last possible cancellation date)

We decided not to cancel- we already knew we wanted to buy in eventually but actually committing is a big, scary step for me! I’ve done too many spreadsheets and pro/cons list, so now it’s just time to enjoy our vacations! Our son turned 1 today and we can’t wait to take him to Disney for the first time!
