What happened to the thread about getting off the bus before scooters?

The ADA act requires that the buses be accessible. Disney would be sued in a heartbeat by the shady activists that go around looking for things to use for. A local restaurant in my area got sued because the bathroom door was a half inch smaller than what the act requires. In Hawaii the transit system got sued and lost even though they were in compliance. They put seats on the front wheel housings and had a small step to get up to the seats. A standard wheelchair would still fit. The person who sued had a bigger wheelchair and couldn't fit. The judge against the system.
I don’t think in this case they should be called “shady” activists. The law is pretty clear on this, but regardless this would cost Disney more money so they would never even attempt it

You'd also run into issues with pickup/drop off locations. The ecv vehicles would use the same locations as the buses for loading and loading. That would likely cause conflict in loading and raise complaints.
They would use the same locations used by Minnie Vans.

I don't think the proposed service is a good idea, but your point is bogus.

Disney could return to the policy restricting use of accessible Minnie Vans to guests with ECVs and wheelchairs. They could increase the number of accessible Minnie Vans.

Free on demand accessible vans is an over the top suggestion. Disney could make some improvements.

Nothing against ECVs, but they do take a considerable amount of time to get on and get strapped in. Add to that the rest of the party, you now have a long line of non-ECV users who have waited a while who won't get a seat (since ECV gets on first), and even possibly won't get on at all and, well, that's a source of frustration. Everyone stays mum about it though because who complains about someone that needs the ECV? How crass would that be? It just seems like there is a better way, even if that involves accommodating them with something like a Minie Van that everyone else would pay a premium for. I really have no problem with that.

What they should do is make the lines accessible. Set up a point close to the front (so that the party would have gotten on anyway even without the ECV) and pull the person with the ECV and 1 assistant to help them load when they reach that point. The rest of the party waits in line and boards when it’s their turn.

Would you still have "no problem" when non-disabled parties found that if they rent a wheelchair they'd get this free on-demand transportation instead of paying a premium for it? Wheelchair rental for a week isn't terribly expensive and would definitely pay for itself with the transportation.

So if you have an adult in the ECV, a spouse, and a child (or grandchild), they leave one? That's part of the problem. Where do you "cut things off"?

Anyone know what Universal does? Or other attractions with similar needs?

If there are only two adults there would need to be an exception made. If there is a third adult they should be required to stay in line with the children.

Cheaters gonna cheat. I would think that a lot of your personal info would be collected as you get the wheelchair and order the shuttles. A threat to trespass you if you are caught would at least stop the people with a conscience.

Just spit-ballin'...

What "personal info" would be "collected" to rent a wheelchair and/or order an accessible Minnie Van? There is no proof of disability if that's what you mean. Read up on disability rights and laws. I really think you have no concept of what you've suggested.

If Disney would simply have ECV’s that were the same price as the rental services (seems doable given the volume) of the same quality (again seems doable) that were available WHERE THE BUSSES LET PASSENGERS OFF, most people wouldn’t need to take ECV’s on the busses. Yes, some need their personal ECV or wheelchair, but the vast majority rent them so they can have a chance to visit the parks. Quite a few people due to age or disability can not do the parks without them. Disney could make this change. Obviously they don’t see the current system as a problem. Why do so many people direct their rants at the people on the ECV’s and the families that accompany them? They can’t change the system. Disney can.

I only suggested that it would be more efficient to provide an upgraded service (on-demand shuttles) to ECV users in lieu of the added time and aggravation needed to get them on and off the regular buses. YOU suggested there would be people cheating the system to get free shuttle service. Sure, that could happen but I don't think it would be wide-spread. Those ECVs are heavy and a real pain to be transporting around if you don't really need one. The legality of the (I would say unnecessary, but you decide) safeguards? Yeah, I am probably over-simplifying.

But if you don't want ECV users getting an upgraded service...OK - noted.

This was the part that got a little wonky:
A threat to trespass you if you are caught would at least stop the people with a conscience.

Who is WDW going to try and trespass? People who don’t actually ‘need’ an ecv/wheelchair? How would they be able to do that, in a legal way?

Not to mention people who've brought their own wheelchair or ECV from off-site, either because they own one or because they rented one.

You'd need substantial capacity if you attempted to force wheel users to use alternative vehicles. They'd need to be available at the same frequency as busses, with system capacity equivalent to the number of accesible spaces on the buses.

I want to get to rope drop as much as the next excited visitor. i shouldn't have to make a reservation six weeks in advance, competing for 1 spot, if a non-disabled individual doesn't have the same hurdles.

You'd need it to be at pretty much the same pickup and drop-off locations at both hotels and the parks, especially if you were splitting parties.

I'm not sure how well required reservations or requests would fly. You don't have to make them for buses today. You're creating an additional burden on individuals with disabilities.

From an overall perspective, such a service might not be perceived as being “equivalent,” which begins to run afoul of ADA regulations.

This is what we do. We are a party of 6, and my husband is using an ECV. He gets on by himself and the rest of us wait in line with everyone else. That comes from years of watching huge groups getting on what will be an overcrowded bus and knowing as we watch that we most likely won't get a seat. He has just started needing an ECV because of his knee but he doesn't need us to hold his hand lol. About 9 years ago karma got me badly. We were staying at POR, and at park close, every time the largest line was ours. We didn't even have to look at the chart. We knew the bus stop with the mass of people was ours. Most nights it would take as many as 3 buses to get on. I was complaining about the ECVs because they take up 3 to 6 seats (in a week, we were only able to sit on the bus twice, and one time was because we opted to wait for the next bus). I was complaining about the (late arriving) ECVs and their entourage after we were unable to get on the 2nd bus, and waiting for the 3rd bus here came not 1, not 2 but 3 ECVs. We had to laugh about it! Karma gets you in the end.
