What happened to the magic of the CMs?

As a CM, it's disheartening to see that threads are started specifically to talk about the things we're doing wrong. Yes, I know ... there are also threads about how CMs are keeping the magic and about how character experiences made people cry, but it's the fault-finding threads that get to me. Think about your own job and what you do ... how would you feel if, every day, you went to a public forum and read about how you weren't perfect or about how your company disappointed someone today? It can get to you.

If you're on a week-long vacation to WDW, you encounter thousands of WDW CMs before you head home. Someone wrote that they had two disappointing encounters during their last vacation -- TWO! Out of how many contacts with CMs? I know that it's Disney's fault for having set expectations so high in the first place, but come on. Spend a week anywhere in the world and you'll find at least two people that don't meet your expectations.

I work in a company that has 55,000 people. With that many people. there are bound to be bad seeds. Disney could have the toughest interview standards out there and there would STILL be bad CMs. Why? Because no one walks into an interview with a crappy attitude or a rude demeanor. They want the job. No one walks into an interview saying, "Oh ... and I like to pick my nose, and will likely do that on the job", or "I really don't like selling drinks, so I'll probably be rude to customers." They put on their best behavior and seem like ideal CMs. They lie about their experience. They say yes to a job they don't want instead of asking if there's anything else. Many, many times, it's not until someone is hired that you discover that they're not really suited for what they've been hired to do. But by that point, there are a whole batch of union or company rules, procedures and regulations that make it hard to simply fire someone. It's not like Disney hires people who they know will be bad CMs.

Again ... I know that Disney has set high expectations, and that we've shot ourselves in the foot by doing so, but please look at your whole vacation experience and balance out the good and the bad. And then please complain to Disney about the bad. Don't just vent on a bulletin board, write it down! Explain where the behavior happened, and when, and who. Report every single rude CM you encounter, because, trust me .... we CMs don't want the "bad guys" around either. But also ... please ... report every single above average CM you encounter too. Because those are the people who need to be encouraged to keep going. And those are the people who are often overlooked, because Guests think, "Well ... he's just doing his job."

I remember when Disney service was untouchable no other industry compared to their level of service, now it seems like it is becomming more and more rude, not all of the service just some of it.

So just curious....what happened? Is it a change in management? A change in the employment pool in Central FL?
One word answer - growth. If you assume 1% of employees in any given company are "bad seeds", then the more the company grows, the more bad seeds there are. Now, assuming the company's customer base grows at a rate similar to it's employees, the ratio of bad seeds to total customers stays the same. However, your PERSONAL chance of encountering one of these bad seeds goes up.

Example:

100 bad seeds, 100,000 customers. Ratio of bad seeds to customers: 1/1000. Ratio of bad seeds to you: 100/1

Now, company and customers grow at similar rate, so now 100,000 bad seeds, 10,000,000 customers. Ratio of bad seeds to customers: still 1/1000. Ratio of bad seeds to you: 100,000/1

Disney has certainly grown dramatically over the last two decades. From their point of view, as long as the percentage of customer complaints (total # of complaints/total # of customers) stays about the same, they will not be concerned. Unfortunately, the larger a company gets, the less personal it's service becomes. Not unlike comparing your local independant hardware store to Wal-Mart.

I guess we have been lucky. My family has been going to WDW since 1971 and I haven't seen any change at all from the first class, quality Disney employees from the past. ::MickeyMo

We encountered a rude CM at a cart outside Dinoland in AK. My husband was trying to buy a new pair of sunglasses to replace the ones he had just broken, and was standing patiently near the register. The CM working the cart was helping everyone BUT him (he was standing directly in her line of sight, right by the register with the glasses in his hand. We know she saw him!). Finally, after having been ignored for about 5 minutes he politely asked, "Excuse me, can you help me?", and she replied, "No, I can't", and walked off. So, he put down the sunglasses and we left.

Ten minutes later, we stop at another cart in Asia to try again. This time, there was a wonderful CM named Tracey, who was sweet, polite, and helpful. We told her what happened at the other cart, and she looked genuinely shocked. She asked if we had the CM's name, which unfortunately we did not. She said, "CM's are NOT supposed to act that way! I apologize for her, you should not have been treated so rudely! I wish you had her name so you could report her to Guest Services.". Of course my DH, who is a charmer, told Tracey something to the effect that if we hadn't had the rude CM we wouldn't have had to stop at another cart, and we wouldn't have met such a great CM like herself. But, it was true; she was awesome, and we made sure she knew how much we appreciated her great attitude. I wish I had had a CM thank you note to give her, and I still need to e-mail her name to guest services to let them know how great she was.

There may be some bad apples in the bunch, but there are some really outstanding ones there too!

We are all so quick to point out when someone is rude. I am making a goal on my WDW vacation and I challenge each of you to do this. I am going to list all the names of all the CMs who go out of their way and report them to Guest Services and/or their manager. I want to give some positive comments out instead of negative ones. I think that this will make alot of people's day.

I've only had good experiences so far, but I've seen the other side of the coin where 2 CM's were chewed out royally by a "guest" for something they had NO control over whatsoever.. It upset me so badly that after the miserable old coot walked away, I went up to them and complimented them on how they just stood there and "took it" - NO backtalk, NO rolling of the eyes - NOTHING..

However, in one of these complaining threads, someone mentioned that she asked a CM for her last name (first name was quite common) and the CM refused to give it to her - stating that they don't have to.. If this is true, and someone does have an unfortunate incident with a CM, would it really do any good to stop into Guest Relations and say that "Stacey" was rude when there could in fact be 10 "Stacey's" working in that park? :confused3

Just wondering how that would be handled if the particular CM was not "stationed" somewhere, but rather walking through the parks..

As for you working for Disney, you clearly love your job and that makes all the difference in the world.. :flower:

Great post WDSearcher!

I agree!

And I think if everyone actually sat down and was going to write a letter to Disney about a CM rather than just posting here, I think we'd find that some of the stuff really isn't worth reporting, it was just a case of someone having a bad moment.

DH used to work at Busch Gardens. He would come home with stories of some great guests he met. But he also had some stories of incredibly rude ones, and I know he had a hard time trying to regain his composure and act happy afterwards.

We were at WDW this past week. I'll be honest - I was getting a little nervous reading the boards - we hadn't been in ... well don't remember how many years - but the castle was pink...

I didn't share my concerns with my husband and sons, as I was the one pushing for the vacation.. and this is the most money we've EVER spent on a vacation in 25 years of marriage. Let me tell you - I was getting VERY nervous.

We visited the parks all 7 days of our pass.. used them to the hilt hopping when we wanted to.. enjoying it. Not ONCE did we encounter someone rude.. for that matter I don't think we encountered someone who wasn't even friendly...

We had a marvelous time - both my husband and older son commenting on how wonderful cast members were - and how they could keep their sense of humor all day in the hot sun...

I think I've come to the conclusion that you'll see what you're looking for.. if you're looking for a "bad time" you'll get it. Our family is very outgoing by nature - I met TONS of friendly folks - whether CMs or other visitors.. it was a great week!

Not if that's all you've got. But if you say "Stacey at the churro cart in Frontierland at about 2pm on Thursday, June 2 was rude to me," you bet they'll be able to figure out exactly who you're talking about.

I know it's a pain to put all the info down and get it to Guest Relations -- via whatever method -- but if the rudeness bothered you that much, take the time to get the info. It really will help Disney weed out the bad ones.

WDSearcher - your advice is SO sound... it's imperative when bringing forward a legitimate complaint to give as much detail as possible.

I worked in some level of customer service/public contact for years and years.. and the simple fact is there are some people who just want to complain - generally those folks don't have details - they only have generalities... it must be something in a personality that just wants to complain.. :confused3

Got it! :)

Now I may just have to get your name so I can tell Guest Relations how helpful and polite you are on these boards even when you're OFF the "Disney" clock! :flower:

Keep the good info coming!! :Pinkbounc

The first instance was at Pop Century when I arrived the women was training a new CM. She was not very pleasant, I was really excited because I just got there and I was extremely patient with the new CM, but the women who was training her had a face of stone. I made a couple of jokes and she didn't crack a smile. Oh well, whatever happened to have a magical day. She didn't even say a word when I was all done. She looked like she was misreble. I couldn't believe she was working at Disney.

LOL! Sounds like the same lady I had to deal with at POR last Sept. She was training a new person(who was VERY wonderful), she never acknowledged me except to snap at me when I asked if we could be placed in a certain building...14 I think. Anyway, she was like, "NO. There isn't anything available." So anyway, when we drove to our building we noticed that the parking lots were empty. It was late at night and the middle of the week. The parking lots stayed empty until the weekend...so I don't know what her deal was. :confused3 We had a great trip even though it started out with a rude CM. :flower:

Amen to that!

Then add to that: sometimes you're around families that have dropped the equivalent of 1/2 your yearly salary on their vacation packages who start to complain about every little thing - man, I wouldn't feel too much magic...

If you come across a rude Cast Member, write down as much information as you can about them ( Date, Approx. Time, Nametag, Place ) and either stop at Guest Relations, or write a letter!

Walt Disney World Guest Communications
Post Office Box 10040
Lake Buena Vista, Florida 32830-0040

or

wdw.guest.communications@disneyworld.com

These letters do get back to that Cast Member's management, good or bad. You can make a difference too!

When we were there last July we got to ride in the front of the monorail and had a nice talk with the driver. What started it was they were putting up a new repeater on the top of the CT resort and the equipment was all on the side of the building and on the side. The driver said who has been with the company over 25yrs "if Walt could see this he would be so upset, back in the old days they would have carried it up by hand or even done it at night when no one was looking." He went on to tell how they are cutting the benefits, not as good of pay increases, etc.... Just not as good of a place to work for so this might have something to do with the quality of people they are getting. Most of the CM's we had not so magical moments with were generally young ones.
