What happened to the candy??

We just got back last week. We had a wonderful trip and the only complaint I have is...What happened to the Candy?
I grew up with Disneyland so I get that the candy between the two were different. At DL we had chocolate covered honeycomb and WDW had never heard of that! In any case, I was surprised that now you can only get a few of the old favorites...like chocolate covered toffee...at the candy counter. I also am not sure what happened to the rice crispy treats, but they are just not the same at all?? Rock candy...little clear boxes of red hots...where did they go? :confused3

I know, last year I was disappointed to find that the salt water taffy was already bagged - you couldn't pick your own flavors.

I think part of the issue is knowing where to find some of these items:

The Confectionary at the MK has reduced to mostly fudge, cotton candy, cookies and pre-packaged items.

You can get more variety at the candy shop attached to the Villans Store in HS, the Candy Couldron in DTD and the candy shop at BWI.

I have seen the chocolate covered honeycombs only occassionally, but if you need a fix, they sell Crunchies at the England pavillion in Epcot. They are made by Cadbury and VERY yummy!

i remember the little clear boxes of candy...my favorites were jujubees...they lasted forever!!! i miss the boxes too...:sad2: when the candy was all gone the box was left over for trinkets from the trip!!!! bring back the clear boxes!!!

We used to love each getting a bag of our favorite flavor salt water taffy. Oh well, now we just don't buy any.

And I agree the rice krispie treats are no longer yummy. We've stopped buying those too.

We were told at the Confectionary on Main Street that the big Mickey Mouse Heads are made there. They taste different than the small ones on a stick you can get all over the parks and resorts which are now outsourced so do not use Disney's recipe (it's a shame about that!). We usually bring back a couple of the big heads! They travel well and keep a long time (not that they last all that long anyway when we get them home! Everyone likes them.)

Exactly! I wanted my kids to be able to do that. Oh well. What can you do?

Even in the past 10 years, the candy at WDW has changed significantly. Our favorite used to be Hunny Pots, which were caramel filled chocolate pots. They disappeared around 2003 or so. Then the krispie gems, mint cookie gems and pretzel gems disappeared a couple years later after becoming harder to find. In recent years they've changed the sweet and sour character candies that my dh got hooked on, now they're nearly inedible.

We used to spend significant $$ on candy at WDW, but now it's just not worth it. The kids like the cotton candy and covered marshmallows, but there's not much my dh and I like anymore. It's all poor imitations of stuff that's all out there in the wider world for less money and better quality.

I loved those little boxes of candy. I still have a box that I keep half-dollar and dollar coins in.

Last May I used a snack credit to fill a bag with taffy. It was really good and you could pack alot of taffy in that bag. This May all the taffy is pre-packaged. I was willing to pay OOP for it but not to be seen anywhere.:confused3

I was SOOO disappointed in the Mickey rice krispie treats last summer. I absolutely loved them in '06 & '07. I drooled just thinking about them leading up to our '09 trip. I was bummed. I thought maybe I just remembered them being better than they actually were. I have thought of trying to make my own at home but haven't attempted it. Yet. Maybe I need to go to the grocery store! :)

I looked all over for a fresh - ie. not sealed in plastic - rice krispie treat in Feb. It is so disappointing. Seems like every time we go, another WDW "specialty" is gone. (Does anyone know if you can still do a RKT at Goofy's candy shop in DTD? - the one place I didn't think of...)

Totally miss the clear boxes. They need to bring them back!

And yes, the only reason I'm hitting DHS in August is for lunch @ Sci-fi and the candy store. It's so much better than the confectionary.

I agree that the Rice Krispie Treats have gone way downhill. I actually used to bring a large plastic food storage container with me to WDW so I could bring a stash of them home. Last two times we've gone, they were a huge disappointment.

By the way Tinkerkell-ey, as of early February this year, you could still do a "make your own" Rice Krispie Treat at Goofy's.

they got rid of the dis themed taffy like donald lemon, goofy lime, and mickey cherry, i was disappoint :(
