What happened to our book thread?

I was wondering about the book thread also because I haven't gotten a notification in ages. Glad I found this one!

I finally started Fifty Shades of Grey.....................;)

Yes, I love those books, wish she would churn out another one soon, lol. I just read the Outlander series tho, not the others about Lord John Grey.

Her books are in my "to read" pile ~ which seems to be growing bigger by the day :)

I really enjoyed this series. I discovered them last year and read all the way from the first to the last one out. Can't wait for the next.

While reading Games of Thrones my reading list has gotten longer! I got the Dressmaker by Kate Alcott so that ought to be interesting

I also loved The Book Thief. Fantastic book.

For those of you that enjoyed The Help you might also want to try Mudbound. Kitchen House was good also.

I am also not a fan of vampire books. Just not for me. I read the first Twilight book. I thought the writing was horrible. I have no desire to read any more in the series.

Congratulations on getting through the first book. I couldn't make it through the first few chapters.

Glad to find a new thread!!!

I'm reading "A Game of Thrones" right now, and really loving it! I am heading to London in a week to join my husband at the Olympics, so I'm planning on downloading the rest of the series and reading on the plane! Loving them!!!

I also have to read "Huckleberry Finn" for September's book club meeting. I didn't enjoy it when I read it in high school, so I'm hoping it's gotten better with age... or that I have.

Ok so Gone Girl was quite the ride. I had no idea what was going to happen next.

Now I'm reading Wolf Hall.

Glynis, I'm heading to London next week too.

Dont you all that have Kindles just love that it tells what percentage you are thru the book, Im into that

I do like the percentages but would prefer to know what page of how many pages I am on. I'm sure there is a way to do it, I just haven't figured it out yet

Oh please, let me know what you think of Wolf Hall. I am dying to read that one

Anyone else a fan of the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon?

Penny

I LOVED these books, though I only read the first 3, then re-read them. I may pick up from the beginning and work my way through them again.

Right now I am reading a bunch of Kindle freebies, and it is very liberating to just delete one if it isn't great.

I thought "Game of Thrones" was so good! I really wanted the visual story, too, and DS19 said the HBO series was good, so I bought season 1 and am watching it on my ipad. It is really well done.

Gone Girl is on my to-read list, too.

Has anyone read On the Island?

I am really annoyed about a Kindle book I just read. I actually thought the Kindle version was defective because it ended abruptly with NO resolution of the intrigue. Then I went and read the amazon reviews and there were other readers who were furious that the author had done this, in order to get readers to buy the next book. Well, just as a matter of principle, I am NOT paying $9.99 for the kindle version of the second book in the series. I am sure I can find "spoilers" somewhere. I think this was such an underhanded, not-nice thing for the author to do.

I wasn't a part of the last thread so I'll jump in here at the beginning of this one!

I have started 3 different books in the last two weeks and nothing is really holding my attention. I seem to be in a reading slump. I am excited to get home from work and read, but nothing is catching my attention.

I have started Grave Surprise by Charliane Harris(I enjoyed the first in the series so I was excited for this one but :confused3, I can't get into it.)

I have also read the first four chapters of Janet Evanovich's Wicked Buisiness. But the story and characters are dumb to me. I thought that Wicked Attraction(the first) was dumb, but enjoyable enough to keep reading.

AND...I started the first in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, but I am having a really hard time grasping the vampire lore in this one. I know I should be open minded, but I am just so confused!:rotfl: I keep having to go back and read what the different types of vampires are and stuff!

I think if you stick with the Black Dagger Brotherhood books you might start to love them... I know I am OBSESSED with them now... I often find myself counting down to the next book in the series and I have read each current book at least twice!

How exciting!!! What for? My husband is a video photographer for our local tv station, and he's been sent to cover the Olympics. I'm going just because I love London, and can't wait to see my favorite sights again! I don't think I'll be going to any Olympic venues, but I'll be playing tourist! I'm so excited I just can't stand it! It's not Disney, but for me, it's a close second!!!

Oh no, Maeve Binchy has died:sad1:, I just loved her writing. Here's the article:

Bestselling Irish author Maeve Binchy dies

LONDON, July 31 (Reuters) - Maeve Binchy, one of Ireland's
most beloved writers, has died in Dublin after a short illness
at the age of 72, Irish media reported on Tuesday.

Binchy was revered for such novels as "Light a Penny
Candle," "Tara Road," and "Circle of Friends," which was adapted
for the screen in 1995. She sold more than 40 million books
worldwide.

Her novels and short stories often examined the friction
between tradition and modernity in Ireland. Her works have been
translated into 37 languages.

Born in the Dublin suburb of Dalkey in 1940, she began her
career as a teacher before moving into a distinguished career as
a newspaper journalist and writer.

She then moved to London, where she became the London editor
of The Irish Times newspaper.

Her first novel, "Light a Penny Candle," was published in
1982 and became a bestseller.

She later published dozens of novels, novellas and
collections of short stories, including "The Copper Beech,"
"Silver Wedding," "Evening Class," and "Heart and Soul."

She announced her retirement in 2000, but continued writing.
Her last novel, "Minding Frankie," was published in 2010.

Binchy lived in Dalkey until her death, not far from where
she grew up.

She is survived by her husband, the writer Gordon Snell.

Just finished reading "Autobiography of a Face" by Lucy Grealy. I would recommend it to anyone. This book showed me that I am lucky to be who I am and to never had to suffer horrendous obstacles. It most deffinately changed my view of things. Next book on the list "The Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglas, an American Slave".

We're just going on vacation (Britain and Ireland) that happens to coincide with the Olympics. We are starting and ending in London. I'm not sure if it will be more exciting being there during the Olympics or more of a headache. I'll find out soon enough. :)

I'm still on Chapter 1 of Wolf Hall. I haven't been able to get back to it. Today at lunch I'm going to read more. I want to get engrossed in this book so that the 8 hour flight will fly by (lol) while I'm awake.

Well right now I am reading the first in the Anita Blake series and I really like it.

I'll give the others a chance again.

I LOVED On the Island.
I read it in January just after I got my Kindle and Amazon kept making book suggestions for their .99 books. I only paid .99 but that book is worth the 9.99 they're charging now. I wasn't blown away by the description before I read it, but it's very good.

I am reading Daughter of the Bamboo Forest by Sheng-Shih Lin. I think it's quite good.

Yeah, I am kicking myself for not ordering it way back then. I downloaded the sample and got hooked, then went back to order it for .99 and it had shot up to $6.99. I figured I would wait and it would come back down, but it didn't. Oh well.

Currently I am reading the 2nd book in the Game of Thrones series. I need to go online and find a cheat sheet for the characters as there are so many I get confused! Other than that, I am enjoying it.

Hmm... what have I read recently?

Oh, read a really heartwarming book called "Saving CeeCee Honeycutt." If you liked "The Help" or "The Kitchen House," you will enjoy this book. It's short - only around 300 pages - but it's full of colorful and memorable characters that stay with you long after you've read the last page. I'm not sure how I even came across it - it's been on my bookshelf for a long time. An absolutely delightful book - so glad I finally picked it up.

Reading "Mockingjay" right now. "The Life of Pi" and "Wool" will be the next two up for read.

I'm 117 on a waiting list for "Gone Girl" which I wanted to get to this summer. I may have to just fork out the money and buy that one.
