I am turning to my golfing friends here on the DIS.

I was going to buy my husband some golf balls for Christmas but I can't seem to figure out what is good. Some are very pricey and not sure what is really worth it.

My husband is an average golfer now. He can be really good, but hasn't been golfing much the last couple of years. I want to encourage him to get out and golf more.

I was looking at the Titleist Pro V1 but they are expensive. They also have the Pro V1X. What's the difference?

So any suggestions? I would appreciate it!

My DH only uses a certain kind of Titleist golf balls... he won't even LOOK at a different kind. It's THAT kind or NO kind. Everyone he golfs with is like that... they have a ball that they use, and nothing else. Some like a certian Nike ball, others like other kinds, but everyone has ONE that they like.

If your DH doesn't already have a ball that he uses, or isn't "loyal" to any one kind, I'd say get the cheaper one and he won't know any different.

Those balls are super expensive and only required if he is a pro.

Get some Top Flite balls. They frequently come in a 15 or 18 ball pack. They are excellent for an average golfer, and for average golfers the more balls you can get, the better.

As a golfer, I'm very picky about what ball I use. If you get a chance, see if you can sneak a peek into his golf bag and see what is in there. If you need to, take one with you to your local Pro Shop and see if they can help you match it up.

Picking golf balls for a man is like us men choosing clothes for women.

I don't like Pro V's that much and will never have Top Flights in my bag.

Either ask him what he likes or get him a gift cert...

Thanks for the info everyone. I will try to take a peek in his golf bag.

As I mentioned he's a pretty good golfer but way out of practice. I am sure if I bought him expensive ones he wouldn't use them until he was back to his old form (so he wouldn't lose too many).

Depends on the guy. I'm an average golfer and I find myself switching brands all the time, trying to find the one that will make up for my mediocre swing. So far, I haven't found it. :)

And my husband will only golf with Pro Vs. He golfs about 4 rounds per week and is very particular about anything golf related.

The prov1x is for people who hit the ball harder. the prov1 are for the players who dont hit it as hard. My husband play the prov1. I would go to the golf shop and ask the experts as to what type of ball he might try. Everyone is so different and he may prefer one ball over the other. I have seen the prov's on sale for 39.99 they can be much more than that. Hope this helps you with this ball.

If he was a good golfer he probably does have preferences for balls, clubs, everything! Not much help I know. I think you'd be better with a gift card that way he can get something he really wants, for instance he might like a new putter. This way he might get something that lasts lots longer and can think of every time he sinks that putt, hits a great drive! Just hope it's not the other way around, lol.

I agree with the majority. My father is a VERY avid golfer.
He is 72, and in season walks 18 holes per day, and then is in Florida doing the same.
Having said that, I will NEVER choose golf balls. I get him a card for DICKS sporting, and he loves it!

Yea...good luck with that. :rolleyes1:laughing:

I like the ProV's but actually prefer the NXT's-the old ones that they don't make any more. Also, define "good" because a single digit handicapper is a different kind of good then someone with a 14 handicap, for example. What is his strength. If he is good around the green and hits a long ball he will probably want the ProV's because they react on the green better. If you don't know the game or his style of play, I would get a gift certificate for some golf balls. Many golfers can be ball snobs (I know I am).

My dh is a total golf ball snob, if I didn't know for sure which ones he wanted, I wouldn't dare try to buy them. It makes it hard to buy things for him LOL!

Golf Galaxy gift card-a TREASURE for any golfer :thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 I can spend HOURS just wandering around that store-well I could until DH banned me from there :lmao::lmao::lmao: (not really but if he hears "Golf Galaxy" come out of my mouth he comes with me to keep me in check). :lmao:

I'm a Srixon Z-Star Yellow or Bridgestone B330RSX guy myself. Pro V1 are good but not worth the money (I like the Z-Star better).

Not all golf balls are made equal. They range from the Ford Pinto of balls up to the Ferrari of balls and everything in between. One guy might be ok with a Kia but the next guy might not sniff anything lower than a Lexus. Get my drift?

Gift cards are always the safe bet, unless you know for sure that the store will let him exchange the balls for different ones if they aren't the kind he likes (which shouldn't be a problem at any decent golf store).

I used to work for a golf store and this was always a big issue around holiday time - wifes coming in to buy balls for their husbands and not knowing what to get - just buy something in your price range and know they can always be returned/swapped. :)

You can always go a different route entirely - how about a fun headcover (if he is ok with those), or a nice team logo ball marker set (if he likes other sports), etc?
