I always seem to forget no matter how many times I fly what goes in hand luggage and what goes in your suitcase.
ie. Travel Hairdrier
inhalers
Video camera films

I know they are saying now that camera films are to be placed in hand luggage due to the new X-ray machines.

Jules, I'd pack the hairdryer and have the film and inhalers in hand luggage. I would not pack any money or valuables(jewellery)/walkmans/phones in the case.

A simple rule of thumb if it's valuable or medical put it in your hand luggage.

I also travel with a change of underwear, clean t-shirt and some basic sample size toiletries. Having been parted from my luggage once and left with what I was stood up in it can keep you going until it turns up!

And don't forget what you can't carry in hand luggage. No pen knives, scissors or razor blades, even the safety type. Always strikes me as bizarre when you consider that you are allowed to take glass bottles aboard.

Another that should be carried in hand luggage is gas canisters for hair tongs etc.

Linking to the threads about locked/unlocked checked luggage there are many things you can still take on board that could be considered dangerous IMHO.

Adding tweezers and metal nail files to your list below.

I was under the impression that anything electrical or with batteries had to be carried in hand luggage.

Also, the obvious like camera film and travel documents!!

When we went through customs at Gatwick they were confiscating loads of stuff, like nail files, razors, clippers, fountain pens, knitting needles etc etc. Be sure to carry anything like that in your suitcase, not hand luggage!!

I know a few years ago (on our Wedding trip) I was stopped because I had too many aerosol items in my hand luggage (hairspray, deodorant etc)....we were going for 3 weeks, so I had a supply!! You are only allowed to carry so many "fluid ounces" of aerosol products in each piece of hand luggage. Fortunately, there were 4 of us travelling so I just spread it out a bit!!:D

At one point advice, many years ago, used to be all electrical in hand luggage then it changed a few years ago to put as much as possible in hold luggage. I now put any hair dryer, travel iron, ladyshaver etc in hold luggage and expensive items ie walkman, camera and camcorder in hand luggage, plus DH likes to listen to music on the wllakman during the flight which is allowed! Films I also always carry in hand lugage don't want to loose them, especially on the way home. Although if batteries are needed I leave them seperate from the equipment. I have had no problems with this way of doing things even in February during hightened security.

we put nearly everything in the checked luggage, the guidelines to carry-on electricals or aerosols are no longer in force.
Our hand-luggage just contains camera, sweets, books etc - the essentials to get you through the flight.

I do agree about a change of clothes although I can never fit it in, but I had to spend a night in Brussels without a case once, and I can tell you it was most uncomfortable.

If you think about it, immediately after 9/11 they asked you to carry no hand luggage at all.

......... you'll need to hand in any metal items separately before you go through th e screening process - they are also screening items such as mobiles and laptops separately ( and the laptop case).

Just to note regards medication, that you need written documentation to take needles into the cabin.

Yes, although the thought of spending 7 to 12 hours on a flight - as I do with some regularity - with abolutely none of the things I routinely carry in hand luggage would see me on a ship!

I can't see that working unless the airlines carried a whole bunch of extras on the flights. You can only read that inflight magazine so often!

I'd say it would be impossible to implement.

My carry-on change of clothes is very basic plus some small toiletries so I won't look a wreck or stink if the worse happens ;)

Well I packed my video camera last time I went to WDW in December in my case and there were no problems - that said I never used it once when i was there - couldn't be bothered ;)

I normally carry in my hand luggage:

Camera
mobile phones
keys
travel docs
medication
moisturiser
Evian travel spritz for face
Fiction book
one wdw guide book - just in case I have a planning panic
spare pair of knickers
make-up (I'm vain I know)
Tissues
Wet Wipes

Sometimes I put video camera in hand luggage but if you do this make sure it will work - I've had to prove this before now.

I did think about buying one of those little wheely carry on cases but Paul said "why bother I'd only fill it with stuff I'd normally put in the cases", he's right so I just take a big handbag for everything or a little handbag and a beachy bag type thing.

I'm with you Sam! On long haul I take my make-up off on the plane, slap on the moisturiser and evian mist during the flight and put the war paint back on before we land. Gives me something to do if nothing else ;)

lol neo, I totally agree - I need 2 or 3 thick books for me. Factor in Katie, and we take one of those wheelie cases full of snacks, presents, toys, music etc etc, I couldn't possibly cope with no hand luggage.

My point really was just that there was no longer a requirement to carry certain items in your hand luggage, I think the aerosol thing was from when the hold wasn't pressurised years ago, but that is no longer the case.

Is there a restriction on what size your hand luggage is? I know it can only weigh so much not sure on how much though?

I have never had it weighed, but there is a box that your hand luggage has to fit in. I'm not sure of the exact dimensions, but they should be on the airlines website.

Bev

Yes, its 5kg max, and we have had ours weighed nearly every trip at Gatwick. Anything heavier has to go in the hold. You can cheat the system a little though....if your bag is near the weight limit, dont buy your snacks/drinks/magazines/books for the journey til you get through to duty free. Your bag is never weighed after check in, and you can then put in it what you like! You know, essentials like a bottle of Barcardi and some perfume!

:D :D :D :D
