Looking for some new ideas....

THANKS!

Karen

I just got finished last week telling DS that we could throw a party for his classmates or we could go away for a weekend as a family. He chose the weekend getaway. Only thing is, he picked JAPAN! I explained to him that it is a 22 hour flight to Japan, so we'd get off the plane, go to the bathroom and get on another plane to fly home. Not my idea of a fun weekend. He told me that he guessed that was ok, so he'd "settle" for Hawaii! That's only a 12 hour flight. I explained to him that I was thinking about Washington, DC, or NYC. He reluctantly agreed to go to Washington, as London was his third choice. I told him to start talking to Daddy about London. That sounds like fun for later this year (and longer than a weekend.) I've been there, and would love to share it with my family.

When my DS had his 8th birthday party, we turned our garage into a movie theater for a showing of "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace". We covered the walls with sheets, threw down an area rug and tons of pillows, and wheeled the TV in the garage. We have lots of Star Wars and Star Trek ornaments, so we hung them from the ceiling along with some Christmas lights. We served the kids pizza and popcorn while they watched the movie. It was one of the most inexpensive parties we have had for the kids, and everyone had a great time!

My two are teens now, so the fun party days are pretty much over.

But, as they were growing up I was known as the Party Queen!

I always set up several game stations at the parties and each child got a prize. The stations were themed to match the party, as were the prizes.

We've had a Hawaiian Luau - complete with a dance and a limbo contest, girls got grass skirts, boys got beachcomber hats.

Then there was the Wild, Wild West Party - everyone got cowboy hats and accesories.

Another favorite was the Pirate Party - where they had to walk the plank on our trampoline. (strictly supervised, of course.)

Others included: Dr. Seuss's Cat In The Hat, Beauty and The Beast, The Little Mermaid, Star Wars (this was was a blast!), Dinosaurs, Winnie The Pooh. When DD was older, we did a Glamour Shot Party where I took the girls to a photography studio for a modified glamour photo session.

We have done cyber bowling, rented a rollar skating rink, and did Laser Tag.

Wahhhhh........ I am suffering from party withdrawal here!:(

Besides doing the typical party thing, the birthday girl (in our case) gets to name the breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. She doesn't have to do any chores and she gets to decide everything we do that day from sun up to bed time.

So if she wants pizza for breakfast, she gets it. If she wants to go swimming in January, we go. If she wants to get into her pjs at 3 in the afternoon and read books til dinner, that's the plan!

From a party perspective, we did a killer Wizard of Oz party complete with doors to the Emerald City, a yellow brick road, pin the heart on the tin man, and all the characters (including the Good Witch -- I have some great cousins :)). The only thing missing was flying monkeys!

DD's next birthday is Saturday -- we are having a sledding party complete with hot cocoa and smores (we roast the marshmallows in the fireplace).

Twice now I have taken DSD (and in one case three of her friends) to a minor league hockey game. Any minor league sports game is a great and energetic place for a kid to spend a birthday--lots to do and relatively inexpensive.
