Planning on shipping items ahead to our resort...along with a cheap toaster and hot pot....

What foods/snacks would you suggest shipping ahead of time???....keeping in mind....weight and "perishability"...(is that a word)????

Thanks so much in advance!!!!

:smooth:

We shipped some breakfast foods such as small boxes of cereal, fruit cups, pudding, poptarts and these really good fresh waffles, not frozen, by Thomas's. They were in the bread aisle. Also some juice boxes, peanuts, cheese and crackers, peanut butter and jelly, etc.

baggage??? We always check a big box of whatever perishables look appealing. Pop tarts, crackers, fruit chews, juice boxes, makings for PB&J, individually packed cookies.

Last time we way over bought & ended up shipping half of it back with our luggage.

Why dont you just buy it down there? I dont see how it would save you that much money to ship it but if you must, may I suggest a few products? if you are looking for items that ship well, aren't very heavy in weight yet will fill you up, here are my suggestions.. I would suggest you ship some Hostess Twinkies, HoHos and Cupcakes. They are very light, yet very filling. Also I would suggest buying a few cans of cheap tuna and some boxes of Tuna Helper. They will work great in your hot pot. One other suggestion is those Jello Pudding cups.. Again, lightweight
Good Luck :) :) :)

P.S. If the Hostess brand are out of your price range, Wal-Mart sells some great generic equivilents

How does one ship stuff to your resort? I have always checked a suitcase (small altho we do snack a lot!) full of stuff, coffee maker (we use ours for hot water for oatmeal tea etc) cereal bread pb/j etc. I would be nice to not have to tote the extra bag.

We always take cereal bars (such as Nutrigrain bars), granola bars, fruit cups (as nutrition tends to take a back-seat on these types of trips! ;) ) *real juice* juice boxes....BUT only if I get them on sale at a real bargain price! Otherwise we simply stop a Publix and stock up....especially on gallons of water to re-fill water bottles with.

I don't get it. Why are people shipping things to the resort? There are grocery stores in orloando last time I looked and if you are shipping a toaster/coffee maker...then maybe you should be staying offsite in a timeshare type unit.

Someone help me out here. I just don't get it...

We have always found it very convienent to stop at the store....but then we've always rented a car. DH and I were there (without kids....) for a business trip and we didn't have a car for part of the stay - and I most certainly wouldn't have wanted to attempt a trip to the grocery store on bus!

I know that Tiffany Towncars will stop at the store for you on your way from the airport to Disney - but not Mears( that I'm aware of anyway!). If you are relying solely on Disney transportation once at WDW I think it would make MUCH more sense to either ship or check a box of provisions than to try to get off-site to go to the store.

Hawt1 why be so critical? Some people take toasters and hot pots because a)it saves money and b) my kids love oatmeal that I don't want to pay $4 a bowl for at a restuarant. I don't want to stay at a time share because I love the *magic* of staying at disney and I'm not wealthy enough to rent a studio or 1bdrm. :(

Airlines are limiting the Number of suitcase you can Check! 2 airlines said only 2 suitcasts per person, 3rd one costs you $80.00

It works out cheaper for some to Ups a box to their Resort the Day before they Arrive. Especially if that want to take bulky items that would be hard to haul thru an airport.

And many use Disney's Shipping service to ship there large or delecate items or large amounts of suvineers home!!

Reread my post. Sorry if it came off as critical. Not what I meant. We have taken food with us on other trips but only when we went to the Caribbean or the like where we know food is expensive. Never considered taking it to Orlando...unless one of the family must have a certain brand of something.

Have never stayed on site, always offsite in a timeshare type unit. Usually just grab a cab the first day and head off to the store and get food for the week or two depending on how long we are staying.

I guess this points out one of the big differences between onsite and offsite. We are going the end of March and have a two bedroom unit at Orange Lake for about $375 for the week (thanks to skyauction.com) all taxes, etc included. Full kitchen, two bathrooms, living room, dining room. We buy our groceries for breakfast and lunch on day one and go out for a nice supper each night.

I know we don't get the onsite magic but...I think our costs make sense (and no need to ship a toaster ahead of time!!!)

Again, just never considered shipping food to Orlando (and we're from Canada - at our eschange rate it might make sense!!!). Did not mean to sound critical...was just confused but had my mind in the timeshare mode rather than hotel room...

Hi Hawt1 - :)

Last year we flew to WDW and took the shuttle over to ASMo so no stops. Instead of packing food in our suitcases, two days before we left I packed Otis Spukmeyer muffins, Pop Tarts, Juice Boxes, Peanut Butter crackers, Pringles, etc. and shipped it UPS to ASMo. It came the day we arrived. Total cost to ship was $ 4.00. We saved a lot of money by eating breakfast in our room and then catching a early big dinner at the parks. :D

The Walmart by our house has 12 packs of individually wrapped snacks in a cello wrappped box for less than $4. They have cheez its/ritz snacks/teddy grahams with 4 of each in each box and a variety pack of three different types of Teddy Grahams. Very light weight and less than 25 cents per snack!

I also bring a box of instant oatmeal variety pack and Costco has a 36 pack of little cereal boxes for less than 7 dollars. Combine that with a gallon of milk and my family of 5 eats breakfast for a week for under $15. Can't beat that! We drive though, so no shipping.

You can also do the intstant Mac and Cheese with water heated in a coffee pot or hotpot. Quick and easy lunch when you take a midday break.

This last trip in April we flew down and used a town car service instead of renting a car.. We did do a 15 minute grocery stop to get bottled water, soda ,etc. but didnt want to rush around and forget something. My son is slow in the morning and we dont eat a big breakfast every morning so this worked well for us.

I bring my breakfast food in the suitcase to save time in the am. Also, my DD really likes PBJ for lunch.

So how do I go about shipping my food?
I'd hate for it to get there late.
Gret

I think most that ship to their resort do so via UPS....you would need to check with them to determine shipping times.

Shipping a box is easy!!!!! I've done this for sales reps who go to conventions and such.

Mark your box with your name (hold for Guest arriving mm/dd/yy), the name of the hotel, the address, city state and zip. As long as it hasn't arrived way early....they will hold it for your arrival. UPS will come to your house for the pickup, too. Just call the 800 # for ups or fedex or your preferred carrier.

We are shipping a box down for our next trip 11/28/02. My husband drinks tons of water and I really refuse to pay $2.50 a bottle. But we are flying in, towncar to on-site hotel and using WDW transport, so this works out best for us. I'll be shipping a case of water for DH and some snacks/breakfast thingies. Not too much, but enough to save some $$$$$ that I could be spending on souvenirs and Christmas presents.

Single serve pudding cups, single serve applesauce, single serve fruit cups, cereal bars, rice krispy treats, single serve cereal (or regular sized box of cereal and disposable bowls, tuna in foil pouches, peanut m&ms, aerosol cheese, crackers, packaged cheese & crackers, packaged peanut butter & crackers, juice boxes, trail mix, pocket bread or tortillas that are shelf stable, raisins, dried apricots, nuts. On yeah, in my part of the country, Frito Lay just came out with something new called "Go Snacks", they come in lightweight, handy (all plastic) containers about the size of a pringles can. They have fritos, potato "crisps" in original and sour cream & onion, a few varieties of Doritos 3D's and a couple of versions of Cheetos....they are in the chip aisle at the grocery store. They worked well because the chips didn't get smashed in the backpacks and the lids snap on, so you can eat just part of them and then seal them closed again. Although these are more expensive than the chips in a bag, if you just buy a couple, you could refill with bagged items and then toss the container at the end of your trip.

I found UPS cost less to ship that US Post Office, you can call them or check their website (www.ups.com) and put in the zip code you are shipping from and to to find out delivery time....I shipped to resort so it got there about 3 days before I left (I used the tracking number and confirmed that the package was received at the resort before I lift town (I figured if there was a problem (there wasn't), they could probably track it down in the 2 or 3 days before I left). I had room in the box for our ponchos, extra ziploc bags, insect repellant and sunscreen, so I lightened my load to the airport.

As far as the toaster goes, we stayed at Port Orleans Riverside
and there was a toaster and a microwave oven availbable for (free) use in the food court. I didn't know about this, and hadn't planned on anything that needed to be heated up, but it was there to use. If I had brought stuff to heat up, the food court was right on the way to the bus stop each morning and there were plenty of tables and chairs there, so we could have eaten there instead of in the room. I don't know, but I suspect the other food courts have these available too.

I've never shipped anything before but I'm just getting a box ready to ship for our Oct 2nd trip and I think its the best idea yet I have one box jammed - probably around 20 lbs of stuff - cookies, crackers, snack bars, PB&J, microwave popcorn, laundry detergent, disposable ponchos, antibacterial wipes & cleaner - anything that I know I won't be bringing back. I don't know why we always lugged an extra suitcase in the past - it doesn't cost that much to use UPS - we're shipping at the cheapest rate so it may take 3-5 days and will be less than $20. We're also taking advantage of a limo service stop to pick up a few more perishable things and water.

Youi'd be surprised how the weight of the box adds up (all the more reason to ship ahead)! I think my box was 30-32 lbs, it cost $16 to ship....I'd do it again. I bought items when they were on sale in anticipation of the trip, so I know I saved money even over the grocery store (not to mention the food court or gift shop prices). We stopped at the grocery store on the way from the airport to pick up milk, fresh fruit, cheese, yogurt, deli meat for lunch the first day (I didn't want too much meat "on ice", it wasn't worth someone getting sick, but I was comfortable keeping everything else iced down in a collapsible cooler in the room.
