what food do you bring on the plane?

I just bought my plane tickets. We have an 11:40 flight so we will need to leave home around 8:30 so no big breakfast and then we arrive in Orlando around 2:15 get to resort somewhere around 4:00. I've learned that my DH stays much less Grumpy if he keeps his blood sugar up. So what kind of food do you take on the plane? I'd want to at least have it ready to go in the fridge the night before. I don't mind taking a small cooler. Any suggestions? TIA!

We usually just bring some snacks...crackers..candy..peanuts and such..but we usually eat at the airport before we leave.
You could probably pack a sandwich and some snacks without too much trouble.

we fly from CA, and usually have a layover/plane change, so we have a long trip. I bring along lunchables for the kids and salads from Trader Joes for the adults. I also freeze GoGurts, and easy fruit to eat (like grapes) in a disposable container.

I also bring along "treats" like rice krispie treats, M & M's and such.

We have had flight attendants comment on our good meals!

Breakfast bars, Chex mix, snack type food. When we flew Delta to Las Vegas we bought Sandwiches on the plane $8. But they were from the Atlanta Bread Company they were pretty good.

We had a similar problem on our last trip for our kids and found carrying a smaller soft side cooler was not only useful on the flight but we used it a lot when we got to our destination. The night before we left I packed the cooler and stuck the whole thing with the top wide open in the fridge for maximum cooling before we left.

We had no problems carrying pre-made sandwiches although we skipped putting in any veggies, and it helps to make them on frozen bread so they stay fresh longer. Julia M is right about Gogurts, they are great, we didn't have those down here at the time and just packed plastic spoons.

For breakfast on the plane the kids each had an individual size cereal, a yogurt, a fruit and a juice. An aside: They had to eat the fruit before we landed in the US otherwise Customs would have confiscated it!

Remmber that snacks like chips and nuts are very salty and therefore dehydrating, I find so anyway. Granola bars are also very packable.

We always have beef jerkey :-) It seems like we cant fly with out having this in our carry on. I also like to buy trail mix packages from the store too.

I usually carry on some yogurt, fruit and crackers.

When I flew Song last month I did buy a salad onboard. It was very good and I'd do that again.

We usually pack snacks -- fruit, crackers, granola bars, etc.

Depending on the time of our flight we bring take-out on the plane. Usually stop at Au Bon Pair at the airport and get sandwiches or salads to go.

Not only CAN you bring food on the plane, but here in Washington DC they ENCOURAGE it. About 15 to 20 minutes before boarding, they make an announcement on the order of "We won't be serving any meal - you still have time to go get something from one of the vendors to take with you." and the same announcement again about 10 minutes later.

We usually bring our cooler (it's more the size of a pilot carry-on bag) and fill it with extra stuff and then use it at the hotel as a cooler. Maybe now I'll rethink what we pack in there (?) for the plane.

Although our flight leaves at 7:30 am and we'll be at the airport by 5:30 a.m. - at that time of day all I want is my coffee

Our flight leaves at 10:55am and we land at 2:30. I am thinking about freezing a juice box for DD and put it in a big ziplock with a lunchable for her. I think she would really like it (she's never had one.) It would be easy to eat and it would take up some time on the plane.

I will also take some crackers, animal cookies, banana, etc. for her. For us I will probably take some granola bars. :)

From a person who travels alot, bananas get squished easily and aren't the best fruit for the plane. Apples travel well or cut up some fruit and put in one of the disposable ziploc containers (or an old butter tubs works just as well.) That way you can just dispose of it and not have to carry it off.

If you need coffee in the morning wait till you are through security before buying any. I have had inconsistent results at airports bringing open coffee containers through the security checkpoints.

I'll never forget a late afternoon return flight home from Orlando once. We had breakfast at WDW but with packing, getting loaded up, dropping off rental car, checking in, we didn't get to eat and looked at some of the lines at the vendors in the airport in Atlanta when we changed planes and decided that we'd be pushing it to get our food, sit down and eat before our connecting flight boarded. We got on the plane and this family sitting in the row ahead of us walks onto the plane with Burger King bags. It hadn't even occurred to me to bring food onto the plane. When you're really, really hungry you will be surprised how good BK smells. They had all kinds of stuff. Dh and I were cracking each other up whispering back and forth about trying to buy some fries or a cheeseburger from them and how high we'd bid. At that point I would have fiven them a $20 for some fries ;-) I looked around and other people were looking at them too and I swear you could see the hunger in their eyes! That was torture!

My DD is 5, so I bring kid-friendly snacks, like animal crackers, mini Oreos (I love the resealable bags), peanut butter crackers, etc.

DD has to eat cereal before we leave, and the rest of us eat at the airport. What will I want at 7 AM? Coffee!! haha

Be careful bringing peanuts on the plane. If you get any snack at all on a plane, it's now pretzels because of individuals with peanut allergies. Due to the recirculated air on board, an individual with a severe peanut allergy can have a deadly reaction just from the smell of them. It's awfully scary and I'm thankful that we don't have any allergies, but my cousin is allergic to nuts. Not so severe that the scent bothers her, but she almost died in Rome because there were pine nuts in her pesto sauce. She went into anaphalactic shock immediately and she still had food in her throat when it happened. Thank God there was a doctor nearby or she would have choked to death.

Our flight is only about 2 hours long. We try to have our regular meal, whatever time of day it is, before we go. I get airsick if I go on an empty stomach.

It is vacation, so there are no rules on what we eat during the entire trip, so we load up on the junk! I fix each of the kids a goodie bag in a gallon size ziplock before we leave. It is filled with all their favorite treats, enough for the return flight as well. They can eat whatever they what, whenever they want but they have to make it last for both flights. They love getting this.

For me personally, I try to consider the four basic food groups.

Salty
Sweet
Sour
Crunchy

This works for us!

While kids LOVE junk food, heck I love junk food :teeth: just make sure to have some more substantial snacks in case of huge delays. I always have a pack of peanut butter crackers and string cheese in my purse just in case. Also maybe one large bottled water for the family. Some airlines are very stingy with the beverages during a ground delay.

I'd do OK on junk food but my DH really needs a good meal or he gets cranky. I think I found a great dessert for him. Mrs. Smith now makes slices of pies. They are frozen and you get 2 slices per package but they are boxed individually. I think this would be great for DH. I'll just put that boxed sliced pie into some sort of gladwear so it doesn't get too crushed. I think I'll make him a nice sandwich and maybe some sort of pasta salad-nothing too messy.

Bagels, peanut butter crackers, bottles of water, gum. That's for the morning trip down. When we leave in the afternoon, we try to eat at the food court area place at MCO and then have water for the return flight. Always have water with us.
