What food can I bring past security at the airport?

Hello, Im not an avid flyer so I have (what Im sure is a simple) question.

What kinds of things can we bring through food wise, through security to the gated area of the airport? Things that are sealed and packaged? I don't want to have to buy meals for 4 inside the secured area, it's not cheap. So i thought I'd ask what was acceptable? Same as beverages. If I had a bottle of Orange Juice unopened, am I able to bring it through security? I dont need these things on the plane, which Im sure makes no difference. :)

Thanks a bunch!

NO to beverages....You're going to have to buy them after the security gate (even unopened they'll make you throw out so don't bother). But for food - pretty much anything that is non-liquid is good. We always bring at least one meal with us - usually bagels, plus some sort of chips for each, maybe a string cheese and then some sort of 'treat' like a cookie or a small thing of a candy. Then, after security, we buy a couple drinks to share and bring those on with us.

Oh and one thing that i always find helpful is that you can bring a separate bag with your meal in it NOT counting as a carry-on. I usually bring the brown bag where I bought the bagels with them in it (so that it is obvious this is not a carry-on but a meal) and throw in there the rest of our meal stuff. That way you don't have to worry about fitting it into your other carry-ons.

Awesome! Exactly what I need to know! :) Last year we bought bagels and fruit past the checked area, and me being so cheap... I just figured if I can save money this time around, then why not? My kids love bagels, so we will go with that! :) Thanks so much!

If you want cream cheese on those bagels you will have to have the cream cheese already on them before security or put the small cream cheese packets in your 3-1-1 bag. No yogurts or puddings either.

I have had small apple sauce containers taken away. Also the small gel cold packs that I use in my kids lunches which was a shame. Pre 9/11 I would grab a loaf of bread and put some jam and PB in small containers, but that is a no-no now. You definitely have to make the sandwiches ahead of time.

I have found that firm food like bagels are best. Also I alway back those little snack packs with crackers and cheese whiz or PB for plane trips. It is the only time my kids get them and they think its great.

I just noticed that you are from Canada. Remember that you can't take any fruit across the boarder. I don't think you can take meat either. Your airport may be different, but here in Calgary you clear customs before you get on the plane and the customs officer will ask if you have fruit etc. and you have to throw it out (or eat really fast).

A cheese sandwich or a pb&j already made up would be a good option, as really it can go without the refrigeration.

Also, we like dried fruits and nuts for snacks. At least you're getting some protein and nutrition as opposed to chips (which of course my kids would prefer!).

You can get drinks for free on the plane, but if you want them in the terminal then you will have to buy them.

How old is your youngest? Our last trip we were allowed to bring 2 bottles of apple juice for our twins who were 2 at the time.
Actually it was a mistake... we didn't know we could... but we were returning home from Disney and had eaten our breakfast on ME. I handed the juice to DH and told him to drink what he and DS9 could before we got to the airport. He instead, tucked them into his backack for later:confused3, which was then found by airport security. She was going to throw them out but asked if they were for our little ones, and she let us take them!

Does anyone know about how snacks/drinks work for people with medical conditions. My son is a diabetic and we WILL HAVE TO have drinks and snacks with us for him for trating highs, lows or just because it's snack time. Is there anything they will limit? Our usuals are Capri Sun Roaring Waters, Gogurt, peanut butter crackers, fruit snacks and juice boxes.

You also have to be careful with peanut stuff - there have been many a thread on here about peanut free flights and parents wanting the planes cleaned out before they would board witha kid with an allergy. I would check about the meds- I think meds are fine but I don't think the drinks, or yogurts are allowed??

You can't take peanut butter, even sealed it's considered a liquid and too big for the 3-1-1 rule. My BFF tried to take hers to Baja with us, not even thinking about it she put it in her carry on, they made her toss it. Otherwise I don't know...I don't fly much.

WAIT! OP is from Canada.

OP, are you flying from a Canadian airport to a US airport? If so, you need to read both the CATSA rules for what you can/cannot take (they differ from TSA) AND you need to understand what food items cannot be taken across the border (in general fruit, nuts, seeds and certain other products cannot be transported across international borders)

A lot of the information you received in this thread won't help you and may hinder you if you are flying from Canada to the US.

I suggest that you read the pertinent websites yourself, rather than trying to get information from a Disney website. People are trying to be helpful, but they are not giving you the correct information.

ther eis a provision on liquids and such. I also would suggest a letter or note from your primary care doctor outlining the need for certain foods (don't go crazy and bring a cooler of food for you all)

Are you saying you made a mistake in not knowing they were allowed? Beverages (juice and water) for younger kids are allowed. They now qualify under the medical and special needs items. I emailed TSA and that was their response.

Thanks for the info. I'm checking out the website now. We'll have to have a note to take his insulin anyway so I'll just have them add the snacks/drinks on as well. Thanks again!

One thing that worked great for us is the Uncrustables. I took them out of the freezer just before we left for the airport & by the time we were airborn & ready for our snack they were still cool inside. I specifically showed them to security & they only said "sure you can take them on, you have to eat don't you". Well, I've taken them on after that & it was never questioned. They were a great snack, perfect that they were individually sealed & I didn't have to worry about anything oozing out while they were in my carryon.

Good luck!

Hello, Yes I am canadian, but we are in Portland Maine flying out tomorrow. I will check out the links provided, but I did have a question about meds. Im pretty confident that prescribed meds would be fine. we have pills, no liquids for that. But, what about kids liquid ibuprofen or pepto bismal? I have a touch of something in my tummy and am going to need it.

Thanks guys, and I hope those who have asked questions here can find the answers :)

However there are still restrictions on food products which apply, whether flying or driving across international borders.

Yes absolutely, but I was asking of flying with food and medication. We have already gone through customs here 2 days ago.

We are getting ready and are flying out in 3 hrs, thanks for all your help!

In future it would be helpful to post that you are flying on a US domestic flight as your location shows as international. I have seen so much bad and wrong advice given out here over the years, and people even arguing and disputing the regulations. Many of us don't bother to post anymore as a result. I would not have bothered to post had I known the situation.

I have also seen many passengers turned away or fined at airports and border crossings over the years - not a good way to start a vacation.

The rules and regulations for carry on items and checked items can be easily found at the appropriate website - such as TSA for American domestic flights, CATSA for flights originating in Canada, etc. The rules do vary by country and there are different rules which apply for international travel.

Those are the only sites I would use as a reference. I would not rely on a Disney website for such critical advice. And I often tell people not to even trust what I post, hence I tend to link to the official sites.
