Does anyone know what exchange rate disney will use when I book my adrs today... Is it a set amount at say $1.5 or does it fluctuate with the exchange rate?

Thanks

The rate isn't set by Disney - it will be set by the card you pay on. Disney will process the charge in $ - the card company with apply the exchange rate and any charges that are applicable.

There are only a handful that require full payment up front. Those with a CC hold won't charge your card unless you are a no show on the day.

As Tracy says, Disney charge you in $'s and its your credit card that set the rate.
Card fees vary between zero and 3.5%, if you post which card you are going to use I will find out the rate, if you have a Post Office or Halifax Clarity Credit card they both have no fees, meaning you get the full interbank rate of $1.60 today.

If you are ever buying something and they ask if you want to pay in $'s or £'s either ask their exchange rate or say $'s, if you opt for £'s they can use any rate they like.

I never ask to pay in pounds in the US as a rule

Thanks wayneg... I naively had no idea that I would be charged extra for using my debit card!! Not best impressed I'm gonna be charged to spend my own money :( unfortunately as I have no other accounts or credit card I have no choice :(

Most of us that go often and use credit cards use either the Post Office or Halifax Clarity credit cards. If you have reasonable credit rating I recommend getting one of these, even if its just for you holiday then cut it up. These 2 cards save me a small fortune every year.
Post Office also give £26.50 cashback via Quidco (free if not already a member) http://www.quidco.com/post-office-credit-cards/?ac

Yes I agree with Wayne, we have had a post office credit card since we started going to Florida it's saved us so much money in charges etc and you get the interbank rate ...

Another thumbs up for the PO Credit Card, also on the good advice of Wayne! I've been using it for nearly 2 years now and it's also saved me loads. I have online subscriptions and buy software online in US$ and use my PO card to get a better rate even while in the UK :)

You won't get charged for those ADR's though unless you don't show up. You can pay in cash for them when you pay the bill. They won't take anything from your card today. Hope that helps.

Sorry to jump in with a question here but do you get charged extra for using a currency card then?? I have cash and travellers cheques too but got a currency card so I could stash them in different places making them less likely to ALL be stolen. If that's the case, will just draw a massive chunk of money out the ATM at various intervals on my hols and just pay the $2 ATM fee! :)

No charge for using a currency card when you spend on it, you pay the fees upfront in the exchange rate you get.
For example the Thomas Cook currency card today is using an exchange rate of $1.5636 whereas a fee free credit card would get you $1.60.
Using a currency card is usually similar to or slightly better than exchanging for cash or travellers cheques but they still have fees built in.
You are also stuck at the rate on the day you buy, maybe thats a good thing if you get a good rate but people that loaded thair cards a few week back only got around $1.50, now a fee free card gets $1.60 but it can work against you also.

OK cool. Thanks for that. For me personally, I got it AGES ago when the dollar rate was just bobbing at the 1.5 mark but I didn't mind that as I would've been tempted to spend it had it been in my account :) As it stands, I'm going over there with $5500 and will only spend $2000 on food and transport, everything else is taken care of already. $3000 for spending money is more than I've ever been let loose ANYWHERE with!! :) :) :)

Unfortunately my adrs are one that require payment in full upon booking - it was taken instantly from my account

Really?? Which was that?? I didn't know there were any that took it straight from your account. Pirates and Pals Fireworks Cruise does but that's because it's a cruise reservation not dining.

Was it taken from your account or has a hold been put on your funds?

Reservations that require payment in full on booking are:
  • Cinderella's Royal Table
  • Hoop Dee Doo
  • Spirit of Aloha
  • Mickey's Backyard BBQ

I thinks that's all. There are quite a few others that take a CC hold incase you don't show or cancel in time. These are signatures, character meals, 'Ohana dinner, Tusker House dinner & Be Our Guest dinner.

I know character meals require you to leave your card details in case of "no show" or cancelling too late for them to re-sell. We had to leave card details for Tusker House breakfast and Crystal Palace lunch. Didn't realise you had to pay up front for some though. Thanks for the heads up on that! :)
