What exactly is the Grand Floridian construction affecting?

I'm torn between staying at boardwalk inn and the Grand Floridian. I figure being on the monorail at the grand floridian would be the ultimate disney world experience but I'm concerned about the construction.

Our trip is scheduled April 13-20th of this year. It looks like all the pools will be open by then, but my main concern is what is beach access like and what other amenities are being affected. I would also really like to know what can be done to avoid a view of the construction. I'm not going to pay GF prices if I wake up to a view of a dirt pit and a construction crane every morning.

I'm with you and watching for answers. I'll be there in mid-May, going for a conference but bringing the family along for the good rate. So I'll have a Garden View room - lowest tier - to fit 5.

Any rooms or buildings to request or avoid because of the construction?

I'm no expert but I just came back from WDW, and it looks like the building is already up. My guess would be that the focus work would now be interior, unless a second building will be constructed. You can see it quite well from the ferry or the monorail. The exterior finishing touches are not complete either. Hope this helps -

My Sister is debating between Grand Floridian and BC. I would love to be able to give her info on construction. Any insights? They are not going until October.

We stayed there in December. The construction is on the far side closer to the Polynesian. As someone already said the exterior is all already up. Pool area is near the new building but doesn't affect the pool. I'm not sure about the beach area but if you wanted beach you could take the walking path to the beach at the polynesian. When I was there they had moved where the Spa was because the building for the spa is right across from the construction. Other than that nothing is affected and there should only be a hand full of rooms that would see the construction, and as long as you aren't in the main building you will not see the construction from your room.

I was just there last Friday to eat at 1900 Fare and the courtyard pool area is a mess. There are walls up everywhere and just not very pretty. I'm not sure when that opens, but once it does the main part of the resort should be fine. If you are staying there relatively soon, I would ask for a room on the marina/Gasparilla side of the property. We've stayed in Sago Cay before, with a view of the Monorail and it was really nice. Great location right near Gasparilla's, which is handy with kiddos, and also near the convention center for you folks there for work. It's farther from the feature pool, but since the feature pool is right next to the new construction, that'd be okay with me. Enjoy your trip! GF is really special. :thumbsup2
