Here's a simple exercise you can do that might clarify what I'm trying to say.
Take two CD/DVD cases and place them on top of each other. The bottom one represents the vehicle's base, while the top represents the part you sit in. The base moves in one direction--the direction of the track. The upper part can move around--up, down, left, right--while staying attached to the bottom. Try moving both cases and rotate the top one a little.
Hopefully that makes enough sense...
