What else can I do with a teaching degree?

Actually, that's not true---Have you called ODE? With all of the new licensure changes (ODE is switching to the residency license), you may be able to roll over to a different license (especially if you aren't really teaching under your current license now). You'll still need to take courses, but you might be able to tap into a district's professional development school. If you do want to teach, I would call ODE and talk to them directly about your situation. My current ODE license (the old 1-8) recently expired. I'm not teaching under it right now, but I called to check to see what I needed to do to renew it and I would need 9 credits. I have a masters and a doctoral degree---so it wasn't about the degree itself, it was about credits earned since the last license issuance. Call ODE--you may have more options than you think---if you want to go the teaching route.

I am teaching under my current license which is preK-3rd. As of today, I am required to obtain my masters degree before my next 5 year renewal because I graduated with my bachelors after 2002 (it was around that time, I'm not sure if this is the exact year.) Anyone who graduated before then is not required to get their masters. I realize that Ohio is making many changes, and I have called them to see if they think this is going to change. They couldn't give me an answer, but told me to call back the first of next year. My hope is that they will change it. I don't want to leave the classroom, I would be happy to retire from teaching when the time comes. The issue is I just don't have the money to put into getting my masters.

Our school district maintains the same requirements as public schools; I would not be permitted to teach without a license.

Thanks everyone for all the ideas. You've given me alot to think about.

I'm in KY. I have a BS in Child Development and a BA in Elementary Ed. I just got hired for a fast-food job.

I really wish I had realized the significance of living within 20 minutes of 2 universities churning out teachers twice per year.

So, I have no advice, but you're not alone if that makes you feel better. :confused3

any type of teaching - driver's ed, tutoring at hostpitals, working for a sylvan learning type place, paraprofessional for special education...those would be good for a resume to keep in the teaching field.

I teach too - moved into special ed to be more marketable:)

if that doesn't work you could always fold it into .."a hat, a broach, or a pteradactyl" - Airplane movie reference, couldn't help it...:rotfl:

Like the OP, I graduated with a teaching degree. And like another PP, I lived 20 minutes near a local teaching college as well so there is tons of competition for the one or two full time jobs that come up. Fortunately my school required a dual major, so I have a bachelors in writing as well as teaching.

I'm a suburban mom late 30's with two kids to be college in the next 6 years.

I decided to apply for a government job. First I applied at the CIA, it wasn't just investigator work, but assistant managers, secretaries and file clerks. Then I found other positions in other agencies. First I researched that many agencies have buildings in my town so I went directly to these agencies. In January I applied to 14 jobs, had two interviews and wound up working for a government agency in July.

Do I love my job? NO. However, it is a job that I could do with a teaching degree. In fact the requirement for the position was a bachelors degree in any subject. The pay is close to but not quite as much as teaching.

I am lucky that many federal agencies are in my town so I can move to a different agency if I want to.
