What DSLR to buy?

I thought this was an interesting post by a Canon owner on a Canon site, so take it for what it is:

I sold my 30D + Canon stuff late last year and Invested in the Olympus system. I too was intrigued by their f/2 zooms and the E-3, new wireless flash sytem. I ended up getiing the E-3 and grip, 12-60/2.8-4 SWD zoom, 35-100/2 zoom, 150/2 prime, 50/2 prime, 1.4x and 2.0x t.c's, and the new 50R flash.

I had the system for about a month and a half before I started to sell it off. I wont bash Olympus, but the noise was too much for me at iso 800 on the E-3. the f/2 lenses are fantastic, but you pay a steep price for them.

long story short...i am back with Canon and happy as a pig in you know what....:)

I only reposted it as an opinion from someone who has jumped from one system to another and then back again. There are plenty of happy Olympus owners here that don't see this as a problem.

That being said, go out and play with a few. Then think about the future as well since no one with a DSLR that I know sticks with the kit lens one year later. You can also use the Search function on this forum. There are about 100 posts asking the same question you are asking ;) It'll help to read those responses as well.

Dizzy, it's no secret you have disdain for anything that doesn't say Canon on it.

Personally, I'd have more respect for your pro-Canon posts if you didn't resort to bashing other brands in order to try to prove your point.

We get it - you like Canon. Enough with the bashing already. :worship:

Nanu, just to re-iterate (and so we don't scare you away ;) ). If you go back and read ANY of the threads around here re: first time buying of dSLRs, you will see that the VAST MAJORITY of posters here will tell you that ANY of the brands will do a good job for you, that you should pick one out that suits you best. :thumbsup2

Whatever system you buy- JUST HAVE FUN ! That's what I'm doing. One day I won't be too scared to post some of my photos.

don't be scared, probably the best stratagy for learning is to post something and ask for crituque, around here, your going to get straight answers without folks bashing you, it really ramps up the learning curve.

Thanks guys! The closest camera store (and that would be a Best Buy and not a REAL camera store) is 30 miles away, so I MIGHT get the energy to drive up there tomorrow. BTW, DH tells me that newegg.com has great deals on cameras.

I would say then go to BB to try them out, but they are not there to help you later. Any thing technical afterwards, they are pretty much not helpful. They just arent' trained to get technical I guess. :confused3 . But by all means let this be your hands on place and then find a place either with in 1 hr or online that has good tech support. GOod Luck, Happy Shopping and have fun

Mickey88, whatever. It's not worth debating you as you're always right and everyone else is always wrong. I'm rather sick of your attitude, so I think I shall be ignoring you for awhile. Feel free to do the same to me.

Pea-n-Me, I agree. :) Olympus is actually the only other DSLR that intrigues me in any way, thanks to some unique and pretty amazing lenses in their lineup. (And the ability to get adapters for almost any other type of lens you can name.) Obviously they'll always be a little behind the competition in terms of high-ISO noise and sheer megapixels due to the sensor size, but they do have some lens options that can't be duplicated with anyone else, and the total package can be that much smaller. It's too bad the really interesting lenses are usually astonishingly expensive, though.

Nanu57v, NewEgg is decent but I don't think their DSLR prices are anything special most of the time. Beach Camera AKA buydig often has the best price on DSLRs, and Amazon can do very well sometimes, too. Both generally offer free shipping but Beach usually ships very quickly, Amazon's free shipping can be pretty pokey sometimes.

Be sure to check out BHPhoto also. Their prices are competitive and their service is 2nd to none. I order a lot of my camera stuff from BH, or Beach. Our local Norman store has very good prices also. So, when I want to talk with someone face to face, that is my choice. Norman Camera also has an online order site with pretty good prices. If you call them, they are very helpful.

interesting, from my perspective it seems you are always the one to disagree with me,, I never said I was right , nor that you were wrongjust that I prefer to believe decades of pros, rather than one modern photographer , when it comes to the proper way to hold a camera.

not sure what attitude you are talking about, , but I apologize if I've upset you

if you wish to ignore me, that's your call, but please don't suggest what I should do, if I have a different opinion on an issue I wil be sharing that with people, so they can decide for themselves which way to do something..

I'll second the B&H thing,, I just ordered 2 vertical grips and batteries from them yesterday afternoon, according to the ups tracking, the stuff is on the truck to be delivered to me this AM...

Hi guys...Just to let you know, I settled on the D60 with the one lens kit. You'll have to help me when it comes time to purchase the super 55-200 one...there's so many different kinds, I know I'll get the wrong one. Should be here tomorrow!

Good for you- congratulations!

Welcome to Nikonsville; I'm confident that you will enjoy your new camera. If you can stretch for it, you might want to consider the excellent 70-300VR instead of the 55-200 or 55-200VR. Of the latter two, from all I've seen, the VR is well worth the extra money.

I agree- the 70-300vr is an exceptional lens for the cost.
